Israel finds tunnel dug under its Gaza border, blames Hamas

By Jeffrey Heller and Nidal al-Mughrabi, Reuters

ISRAEL-GAZA BORDER — Israel displayed on Sunday what it called a Palestinian "terror tunnel" running into its territory from the Gaza Strip and said it was subsequently freezing the transfer of building material to the enclave.

"The discovery of the tunnel ... prevented attempts to harm Israeli civilians who live close to the border and military forces in the area," Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said in a statement, accusing Gaza's ruling Hamas Islamist movement of being behind construction of the 1.5 mile-long tunnel.

There was no claim of responsibility in Gaza but a spokesman for Hamas's armed wing wrote on Twitter that "the determination deep in the hearts and minds of resistance fighters is more important than tunnels dug in the mud."

Hamas, along with other militant groups, tunneled into Israel in 2006 and seized an Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, who was held for five years before being exchanged for 1,400 Palestinians in Israeli jails.

The Israeli military said it found the tunnel along its fortified Gaza border last week near a kibbutz, or communal farm. It invited journalists to view it on Sunday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who launched an eight-day war against militants in the Gaza Strip last November with the declared aim of curbing rocket attacks against Israel said the effort was "part of our policy, a policy of aggression against terror, with elimination, with intelligence work, with activities that we initiate and react to."

Netanyahu also publicly congratulated the army "for uncovering the terror tunnel."

The military said the tunnel, dug in sandy soil, had been reinforced with concrete supports, and Yaalon announced that he was immediately halting the transfer of building material to the Gaza Strip.

For years, Israel had refused to allow these goods into the territory because it said militants would use them to build fortifications and weapons.

In 2010, as part of its easing of its internationally-criticized Gaza blockade, Israel gave foreign aid organizations the green light to import construction material for public projects. Last month, Israel resumed the transfer of cement and steel to Gaza's private sector.

Hamas seized the Gaza Strip in 2007, a year after winning a Palestinian election, from forces loyal to Western-backed President Mahmoud Abbas. The movement is shunned by the West over its refusal to renounce violence and recognize Israel.

Someone in Israel is getting grey hairs very fast trying to estimate whatever crossed there and if there are more tunnels.

A guy on the other side of the tunnel wonders if they know about the others.

      1) Israel loosens up restrictions and lets building materials into Gaza.
      2) Gazans use these materials to build a tunnel for the declared purpose of slaughtering children.
      3) Israel becomes less willing to let more materials in.
      4) World presses Israel into endangering itself and jeopardizing the lives of its citizens.
      5) Israel loosens up...

Repeat ad nauseam. Fool me once.....

Israel allows construction materials into Gaza for humanitarian purposes and what is the result?

Months of labor, 800 tons of concrete, 25,000 concrete slabs, and miles of electrical cable all diverted for a terrorist tunnel into Israel to kill and kidnap Israelis.

And then the clueless wonder why we are reluctant to allow such transfers on good faith.

Follow the materials, don't forbidden them.
It wont be easy, but it's surely doable. Israel tracks firearms, tobacco, alcohol and other thingies of special interest.

More people need building materials, well, for civilian use.

Tracking every bag of concrete that enters palestine? Is that even possible? That would be difficult for them to do even within Israel.

It is possible to track anything you want. If you really want it.

Why should the onus be on Israel to track humanitarian goods in Gaza? No sensible nation would incur such prohibitive costs and risk in adversarial territory.

It would be far more cost-efficient and pragmatic to curtail such transfers.

If it wishes to receive dual-use construction materials, Hamas must demonstrate total accountability and guarantee benign usage.

Because they look silly and like bullies.

Only if Israel as occupying force there guarantees people wont return to the neighborhood without homes.

Yep, because Hamas is stupid, your guys have to be even more stupid. Nice reasoning. Meanwhile let the civvies sleep in tents (are they allowed?) and then wonder why they are so pissed. Even more then some time ago.

It is Israel's responsibility to take care of those people and their housing. Don't like it, just abandon the area.

It is not Israel's responsibility to supply Hamas with the materials to construct tunnels for terrorism, but to protect her citizens.

In addition Doktor, you should probably do a cursory check before embracing unwarranted and ugly assumptions.

Officials said Israel would continue to allow the transfer of construction materials for projects overseen by international organizations.

                          Minnie,

I am lost with your last 2 posts. With which of these you agree? What ugly assumptions?

Anyway, we have pushed it too far with this topic. You have personal bias, I have ignorance.
I only know what my friend, you, Bennie and media tell me and I base my opinion on that.

We are not a stupid people Doktor, nor are we gullible. Building materials under international supervision will continue to be available for housing needs.

In light of the Hamas duplicity here, requiring such safeguards is being astute and sensible rather than stupid and injudicious.

I haven't called names, I was saying that being stubborn with extremists is not the smartest thing to be done. Especially when it's not the extremists who suffer, but the people.

What Israel done now is what I have been saying would be good to be done.
