That's unfortunately not true in India. You have to look at the roads (or what they call roads) in the mountainous regions there to understand the difficulty. The towed guns (along with the truck pulling them) are simply too long to move around with the extremely narrow roads and sharp nasty bends. A mounted gun would be much shorter and more nimble to maneuver.

      Firestorm,

True. However, the mountain would require towed guns, mostly transported by air. The deal for the M777s are eyed through this angle, ultra-light guns easily air transported.

It's called the tow hitch. The gun and the truck are two pieces and it bends at the hitch which makes both the gun and the truck individually shorter than the truck mounted howitzer making the pair far more nimble than the gun on truck combination.

          Colonel,

Thanks it does make it clearer.

But that doesnt take away from the fact, the intention and plan of Air Force. It is a matter of time, Its a relatively new force with just 5 years under their belt.
I will have to take Air Chief's words and lot of information out there which talks about what the Indian Air Force wants of the Gaurds.

reading what all these experienced military men are saying defcon,i think all the glitz spewed by the air chief and other officials is to get funding approved by the politicians for an unnecessary unit.
