Last German surrender in the West was the Island of Spitzbergen, Sep 1945... the german weather station there had been forgotten.

Last territory in the West to be liberated was the Channel Isle of Minquiers on 23rd May, they really had been forgotten. The small garrison flagged down a fishing boat to take them over to England to surrender.

those guys had to be simultaneously thanking their lucky stars they were stationed where they were, and not, say, berlin.

at the same time they had to be driven insane about what life was like for their families back home.
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov

          Yup!

This day in history, Soviet Susloparov General who signed the surrender document at Rhiems likely suffered a high velocity cerebral hemorrage. Surrender ceremonies were rescheduled for May 8 in Berlin but the actual final document would not be signed until May 9.

Four months later, aboard USS Missouri, a certain Canadian Colonel wished he suffered one as well.

Ivan Susloparov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Eisenhower suggested, Susloparov forwarded the proposed text of the surrender instrument to his superiors in Moscow, and started to wait for the authorization to sign it in the name of the USSR. No response, however, came by the scheduled signing ceremony time (2:30 AM on May 7), and General Susloparov made what, in retrospect, was the right decision: sign the document, but with the caveat that a new surrender ceremony may take place elsewhere if any of the allies request it....As Susloparov went to report on his actions to Moscow, he saw a freshly arrived order not to sign the act.

Just as Susloparov expected, the Soviet Government indeed requested a second surrender ceremony, which took place in Karlshorst near Berlin late on May 8. General Susloparov was present there as well....

He died on December 16, 1974 in Moscow and was buried in Vvedenskoye Cemetery.

Thank you for the fascinating input. It'll be useful in a pub trivia someday! Also a peculiar case was the Danish island of Bornholm, which was "liberated" by the Soviets, who then grew very reluctant to hand it over to the western allies. They only left in 1946.

Equally fascinating is the Anglo-Soviet occupation of Iran and Soviet efforts to set up Iranian SSR's that did not officially go away until well after the war.

Only one European nation invaded in WWII was never liberated- Iceland.

The only non-Axis western European nation to end WWII with less territory than it started with- Denmark.

France lost Syria and Lebanon during WWII and never regained it afterwards.

Japan was liberated by Americans. She was also an aggressor nation, her territorial inviolability was forfeit when she violated others.
