What is mind-blowing, when you think of it, is the scale of the nebula.

To us, it looks like a weather pattern on Earth. You can almost expect to see the gases swirling and moving. Then, you see baby stars within the nebula, and you realize you're looking at light years across in scale.

If you could stick the Earth in the horse-head nebula, it would be like a dust mote, totally invisible, like trying to see an individual proton in a grain of sand.

Almost right Eric. What you're seeing is most likely crustal displacement. The core is liquid, with the whole moon being heated by the gravitational pull of Saturn. As Enceladus flexes, the crust is pulled and distorted, liquid water flows upward through the gaps created and freezes on the surface. The smaller lines are mountain ranges created by compression of the crustal plates. The round circles are impact craters from 'snowballs'

Current guess, and I stress guess, is CO2 eruptions
