    • Thoughts from a year on....

A year ago today 2 bastards shattered the joy of my great home city at the Boston Marathon.

In that time it has been truly fantastic to see what has happened in the Hub. The various sports teams of the city responded in their own way to help make Boston Strong. From David Ortiz’s eloquent words last April let EVERYONE know how we feel about Boston, through the great run by the Bruins and guts and determination of Gregory Campbell and Patrice Bergeron, the impossible run by the Red Sox to the Series victory and the next man up, make it happen success of the Patriots. Even the, this year, hapless Celtics made a positive mark on the city and the area.

I have been back several times over the past year, as I do every year, but this past year there has been a difference. There has been an incredible spirit reignited in The Hub. While it was always a city of high spirits there is now an exuberance coupled with a rekindled toughness in Boston.

That is best reflected in the Boston Athletic Association, the organizers of the Boston Marathon, had to add 9,000 slots to the field this year. Up from 27,000 runners last year next Monday 36,000 will run. I am proud to say my brother will run his 8th an my nephew his 2nd…last year was his first. He completed about 12 minutes before the bombs went off.

      Boston Strong!

      • A couple of punks aren't going to break the spirit of any city, much less Boston.

You showed the world what you're made of.

        Way to go chowds!

        • From a column in today's Boston Globe....Run Because....

          Run.

          Run fast.

          Run far.

          Run because you love Boston.

          Run for 26.2 miles.

Run for 23 miles if that's all you can.

          Run because you're scared.

          Run because you're secure.

Run for Martin, Krystle Marie, Lingzi and Sean.

Run for those who could once run but now cannot.

Run for those who will run again.

          Run for a cause.

          Run just because.

Run after begging, pleading and cajoling anyone and everyone for a number.

          Run to raise money.

          Run to raise hope.

          Run to raise our spirits.

          Run your personal best.

          Run your personal worst.

          Run somewhere in between.

Run because you lost a bet.

Run because you won a bet.

Run because you couldn't finish last year.

Run because you got screwed from crossing the finish line.

Run because you've never finished any year.

          Run because you've always finished.

          Run to impress your friends.

          Run to impress yourself.

          Run to hear the cheers.

          Run to conquer your fears.

          Run to win.

          Run to place.

Run to show - everyone you can.

          Run for the money.

          Run despite the money.

          Run for no money.

          Run to be free.

Run even if cost a lot of money to get here.

Run as if no one is watching.

Run even though there will be cameras and police nearly every step of the way.

Run to see Hopkinton, Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Newton, Chestnut Hill, Brookline, Kenmore Square and the Back Bay.

Run to see the Engine 33, Ladder 15 firehouse off to your right as you turn onto Boylston Street.

Run to hear the roar of million people you pass.

Run so thousands more can follow.

Run to be one of the 36,000 unique stories to be told.

Run because it's your first marathon.

Run for Johnny Kelley, Bill Rodgers and Katherine Switzer.

          Run for the photos.

          Run for the video.

Run for re-Tweets, Facebook "likes" and Instagram shares.

          Run to feel great.

Run even though it's going to make you feel miserable.

          Run for Patriots Day.

          Run for one.

          Run for all.

Run because this is the 2014 Boston Marathon and no one can or will ever take this Boston Marathon or any more Boston Marathons away from any of us.

          Run because we won.

          Run because they lost.

          Run, dammit.

          Run.

          • Proud of AR Brother.

            He finished in 4:33:02.

More importantly he raised over $7500 this year alone, and over $60,000 through the years, for the Dana Farber Fund.

Congrats to ALL the runners this year!

            • 2 years ago when I was I was posting like a madman about the bombings a lot of folks wondered why there was such a passionate response from Bostonians over this tragedy. Many folks could not understand how a road race could mean more than the Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots and Celtics.

Well perhaps this picture from the midst of the big storm which hit Boston this week will explain.

              • That is a pretty cool story. According to the police commissioner there was a guy running around in a yeti suit and another in a chewbacca suite.
