The British towed everything out long before Italians started the raids. Given what they had on Malta when the raids started it is really hard to say it was not to be "given.

In checking up on the battle of Matapan, I was reading that it was both the RAF and Army who said that the Island could not defend itself against the Italian Air Force. However political opinion was against losing the Island.

Italians trying to "play safe" actually emboldened the Brits.

So, you have read The Navy at War 1939-1945 by Stephen Roskill?

I suspect a hastily form Malta defence force of 4 Sea Gladiators and eight pilots, might have something to do with it as well!
