The above are Cassini images of a storm on Saturn that persisted for months. The red triangle marks the head of the storm (about the size of Earth) and the yellow triangle marks its tail. In July of 2011, the head caught up with the tail and the storm dissipated. At its peak, the head vortex was 7,500 miles wide and the storm stretched for 180,000 miles. The power of this storm is difficult to comprehend and featured an upwelling of air so immense it would have sucked the Earth’s atmosphere clean off in about five months.
