  • India and Pakistan in Kashmir border skirmish

Indian and Pakistani troops have clashed near the Line of Control in the disputed Kashmir region.

Pakistan said Indian troops had raided a military post in the Haji Pir sector of Pakistani-administered Kashmir, killing a soldier and injuring another.

An Indian army spokesman said it had responded to a "ceasefire violation" but did not cross the Line of Control.

Kashmir is claimed by both nations in its entirety and has been a flashpoint between them for more than 60 years.

Exchanges are not uncommon but rarely result in fatalities.
    'Small arms'

The Pakistani military said in a statement that Indian troops had "physically raided a checkpost named Sawan Patra".

The Haji Pir Pass is just south of the main road from Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir to Srinagar in Indian-administered Kashmir.

"Pakistan army troops effectively responded to the attack," the Pakistani statement said, adding that Indian troops had left behind weapons as they retreated.

One Pakistani soldier was killed and another critically injured, it said.

Indian army spokesman Col Jagadish Dahiya told Reuters news agency it had responded to a "ceasefire violation" by Pakistan.

He added: "None of our troops crossed the Line of Control. We have no casualties or injuries."

Another Indian army spokesman, Col Brijesh Pandey, told Associated Press that Pakistani troops had "initiated unprovoked firing" with mortar shells and automatic weapons at Indian military posts. One civilian home was destroyed, he said.

"We retaliated only using small arms. We believe it was clearly an attempt on their part to facilitate infiltration of militants," Col Pandey said.

There has been a ceasefire in Kashmir since late 2003.

India suspended a peace process with Pakistan following attacks by Pakistan-based militants in Mumbai in 2008. Negotiations resumed in February last year.

Last month, the nations signed an agreement to ease visa restrictions on travel for some citizens.

Pakistan accuses that Indian troops crossed the border. This is something different and rare.
It is so. It cant be otherwise

An Indian raid would have resulted in elimination of the complete fwd post, and not 1 or 2 dead. These fwd posts are section/ platoon strength deployments.

That is what has happened in the past when either side carries out a raid across the LOC.

    Cheers!...on the rocks!!

Looks like Pakistan is trying to maximize infiltration this winter.
2012 was very quiet in Kashmir and they would want to change that for 2013.

Its old news that they try to provide covering fire for infiltration attempts all the way up to even using artillery.
Maybe somebody on the Indian side got lucky and they are trying at least to get some propaganda bonus from it?

Indian troops shot dead near Kashmir's Line of Control

Two Indian soldiers have been shot dead in the disputed Kashmir region between India and Pakistan, officials say.

An Indian army spokesman said a patrol was attacked by Pakistani soldiers in "a grave provocation" near the so-called Line of Control.

Pakistan denied the accusation. The deaths came two days after a Pakistani soldier was killed near the LoC.

Kashmir is claimed by both nations in its entirety and has been a flashpoint between them for more than 60 years.
        'Badly mutilated'

Tuesday's shootings took place near Mendhar, 220 km (140 miles) north of the Indian city of Jammu, Indian officials said.

Indian army officials accused the Pakistani soldiers of taking advantage of thick fog to sneak across the border and target their soldiers.
        Map of Kashmir

Indian army spokesman Rajesh Kalia told the AFP news agency that they were "regular soldiers" who had moved 400-500m (1,300-1,600ft) inside Indian territory.

An Indian ground patrol in the area "saw something suspicious and then there was a firefight with Pakistani troops", he said.

"We lost two soldiers," he added.

But a Pakistan military spokesman in Islamabad denied what he described as an "Indian allegation of unprovoked firing".

The clashes are similar to the one of two days ago in which a Pakistani soldier was killed. Pakistan has alleged that Indian soldiers crossed the LoC, a charge denied by the Indian army.

Exchanges in the disputed area are not uncommon but rarely result in fatalities.

Our spine less government will come out with typical diplomatic statements. This is being going on for ever. I don't know how the Army accepts this kind of brutality and keeps quite. Enough is Enough. Whats the purpose of spending loads of money in arming ourselves?

i feel sorry for our two guys but killing 2 indians or 200 indians doesn't change geopolitics. when india does solve the pakistan problem, it has to be complete and thorough. the reality of this situation is that india will also have to account for both the US and chinese military. the russians weren't dependable in 1971 also. the enterprise was successful in preventing india from going into west pakistan. i have no doubt that this will happen again.

I don't get their love for body mutilations and beheadings? They have a bad habit of this. Maybe it's time to send in the Paras and pay them back in kind.

Such shame that these savages have to be addressed as humans.
Even as soldiers, they have no honour, the poor family will recieve the behaded body, just like in Kargil. May they find peace.

Things are not queiting down, news is still filled with cross border firing, the government has to understand they have to train Pakistan by taking things to the maximum possible escalation and beyond everytime they do such stupidities.

This is happening because Indian government is made up of cowards who shit their pants too easily, everytime they ignore a incident they set a new threshold at which they will not do anything.

This threshold should be a Pakistani smuggler, fishermen, tribal crossing the border, anything above that should escalate things to a point where it hurts Pakistan financially just to keep up the tempo, without this i doubt we will have peace with these savages..

looks like we're at the bottom of the sinusoidal curve that is Indo-Pak relations. four years of back door diplomacy, cricket, trade, and we're back to square one.

The 2 soldiers have been identified. They belonged to the 13 Rajputana Rifles. If media reports are to be believed, the head of one of the soldiers was taken back as a war trophy by the Pakistanis.

Sounds quite similar to the 2000 incident when Ilyas Kashmiri's 313 Brigade beheaded a soldier of the Maratha Light Infantry and paraded around his head in Pakistan. Musharaff allegedly gave IK a cash reward for that stint.

Has the time come for the ceasefire to be dumped?

I was going to be appalled by this ... but then I remember when this forum cheered when a Gurkha took back a Taliban head ...

                          Sir,
The Pak Army are not Gurkhas and the Indian Army are not Talibani terrorists.

A khukri charge is the same as a bayonet charge, where the enemy has equal opportunity to to fight back.
In the Brit Gurkhas case - he took "evidence" that was required to identify the high value target that his unit was hunting.

Gurkhas, do not behead dead soldiers.

I don't buy that for one second. He was a Gurkha which meant that he probably knew the Queen's Rules better than most. He knew what he was doing when he took a head. Maybe adrenaline took over but I do not believe a Gurkha do not know the rules.

Sir, I do not want to deviate from this thread. However, there is no rule in the Gurkha training manuel that says, "dont behead the enemy". He is trained to behead the enemy with a khukri.

However, mutilation of dead uniformed soldiers by uniformed enemy, is not acceptable.
