27 dead in Newtown school shooting

At least 27 dead in Newtown school shooting

    By Bill King, Eyewitnesss News

NEWTOWN (WABC) -- At least 27 people, mostly children, were killed in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, Friday morning.

Officials say at least 18 students are dead, and that number could rise. The shooter, who police say is likely someone with ties to the school who may have had a confrontation with the principal, is said to be among the fatalities. Sources say one shooter was 20 years old, armed with four weapons and wearing a bullet-resistent vest. Two guns, said to be .09-mm pistols, were recovered at the scene.

Police report that the school is now cleared of shooters, but they are still treating it as an active shooter situation and all schools in the district remain locked down. There are unconfirmed reports of a second shooter, but it is unclear what happened to that person. State police have confirm that two shooters were inititally believed involved.

Officers have gone classroom to classroom to make sure the school is clear. Authorities are searching the area, doing roadblocks and checking suspicious vehicles out of an abundance of caution. There are also unconfirmed reports that authorities have surrounded a purple van in Danbury that may be connected to the shooting.

State police are assisting Newtown police at the school, located on Dickinson Drive in Fairfield County. Governor Dan Malloy is also at the scene, and President Obama has been briefed on the situation.

The first 911 call reportedly came in just after 9:40 a.m., stating that multiple students were trapped in a classroom with a gunman. The school locks its exterior doors during the school day, so it is unclear how the gunman or gunmen gained access to the building.

Students were escorted from the building and evacuated to a nearby firehouse, and a reverse 911 call went out to parents. Some children could be seen reuniting with their parents outside the firehouse, but published reports said at least one entire classroom was unaccounted for.

Some students were reportedly being treated for trauma. A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher had been shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital.

The school houses more than 600 students from kindergarten through fifth grade.

The district is made up of four elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. Schools in neighboring Monroe also locked down its schools as a precaution.

    Excerpt:

Law enforcement sources in Washington said the gunman was in his early 20s and was the father or another relative of one of the children. He had four or more weapons and was wearing a bulletproof vest.

A weapon was recovered at the scene.

According to sources, the event began with an argument with the principal. Some of the staffers were shot first, then the gunman advanced on a classroom, shooting.

Moderators: might want to merge this thread with the one Antimony started.

Latest report is that 29 are dead.

20 children(18 on scene and two later on inthe hospital).

6 adults (speculation is one of the dead is the gunman's mother, a Nancy Lanza)

    And the gunman, Adam Lanza.

There is another crime scene with one dead body, which they are speculating is the father of the gunman.

Older brother of the gunman is being qurstioned by the police.

I grew up near Newtown. For a while it was the only dollar theater within a 20 minute drive.

I think it might be time to consider armed teachers. In an active shooter situation the coward almost always kills them self as soon as they face a threat that can shoot back.

    Z,

I realise you have good intentions, but can we hold off on the gun discussion for at least 24hrs. Other websites are already descending into the usual arguments and it is an unedifying spectacle. You haven't done that, but I can see where this path leads.

It would be nice if WAB could just stay focussed on the tragedy for a day or so before we get into yet another discussion of guns in America. For the moment lets leave that to the politicians (who feel they have to) and the self-obsessed (for whom every tragedy is an opportunity to tell the world why they are right).

Thats the whole crux. It is the people that are defective and not the fault of the tools they use.
