Iran unveils unusually colored blue submarine

The Iranian Navy's unusually colorful new Sina 7 submarine (AP)It looks like the Iranian Navy really wanted people to see its new submarine. In a live broadcast on state TV on Wednesday, the Islamic Republic showed off a new Sina 7 submarine that is painted in an unusually bright turquoise blue hue.

So, why exactly would any military want to design its ship in a color that can be easily spotted ? The Daily Mail speculates that the ship's designers mistakenly chose the color, believing it would help the craft blend in with the ocean's waters.

Launched from Bandar Abbas, near the Strait of Hormuz, the Sina 7 and two Ghadir-class submarines represent the first wave of the country's "indigenously built" warships, Iran said.

"Since the beginning of the Islamic Revolution, we have learned not to ask for help from other countries and stand on our own feet in meeting our demands," Iranian Navy commander Habibollah Sayyari said during the broadcast.

"Thanks to the Islamic Revolution, Iran has acquired the know-how to build submarines. No one believed that we would reach a point where we would build destroyers capable of carrying helicopters and missiles in the Sea of Oman and oceans … because it's a very difficult task to build destroyers and submarines."

The Sina 7 is reportedly capable of firing anti-ship missiles, which the Iranian government says is a centerpiece of its new defense strategy.

Two repaired hovercraft vehicles were also showcased during the broadcast.

The same guy that paints the cockpit interiors of Soviet/Russian warplanes broke into the Iranian shipyard at night and just went crazy!

Correct me if I am wrong -- isn't that the idea of submarine warfare is to be stealthy? you really don't want people to detect you.

That sounds like a silly reason. Iranians are not idiots. Perhaps it was painted blue only for public display?

All they have to do is look at photos of American, Russian, Chinese, French, British, German, Israeli or Indian submarines - are any of them not black? The color scheme of a submarine isn't rocket science really

So, they are either idiots or what TH said. Or both.

On a side note, Older Muslim families over here used to erect walls around their houses and painted them exactly that shade of blue. They were doing it in order to prevent the house from the Devil (Shayṭān), so it is maybe an added armour feat or something to that extend.

To begin with, this sub can only operate in brown water ... hardly effective submarine waters ... secondly, sub's greatest enemy is sonar, not line of sight. Thirdly, antiship missiles can't see blue.

Antiship missiles can't see blue? Don't they have mostly inertial or radar guidance? Also, who would waste AShMs on midget submarines?

Radar guidance means they see a big blob that matches the blob they were aimed at and told to hit. The scenario where color would be most relevant is TV guided, but I'm fairly certain even those are black and white....

I looks to be black beneath the waterline. I'm guessing some kind of promotional purpose, though I'm no sub expert...

What Doktor said seems plausible as well. Perhaps it's some kind of ritual roughly equivalent to christening a ship?

One would hope so, for their sake, because if they went to war in that tiny tub - they wouldn't be very well protected from the USN.
