    Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) ... Rotating Detonation Engines (RDEs) with potential for significantly reducing fuel consumption in future gas-turbine engines.
    Below is a follow on to the above, 5 years later...

    I suspect that NRL has lost something significant with the retirement of Dr. Kazhikathra Kailasanath. These advancements are born in the minds of individuals involved in the research and design development efforts. Some are very much better at it than others, as was the case with Dr. Kazhikathra Kailasanath.

    Dr. Kazhikathra Kailasanath retired from the Naval Research Laboratory on Oct. 31, 2017, after 33 years of government service. Prior to retiring, Dr. Kailasanath served as the Director of the Laboratories for Computational Physics and Fluid Dynamics here at NRL.

    In the words of his colleagues, Kailasanath is a pioneer in the development and application of numerical simulation capabilities to elucidate details of the stability, dynamics, and performance of advanced propulsion systems. He is known for improving understanding of the operation and limits of complex, innovative propulsion systems such as ramjets, ram-accelerators and pulsed and continuous detonation engines. He has significantly reduced the time needed to test and evaluate new propulsion concepts or fix problems with established propulsion systems through numerical simulations.

    Dr. Kailasananth is a decorated NRL employee, having received the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 2009. He has published over 400 articles and received NRL’s Alan Berman Research Publication Award 8 times. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the American Physical Society, and the Institute of Physics. His broad engagement in the research community includes his service as deputy and associate editors for the AIAA Journal and on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Spray and Combustion Dynamics and the journal Combustion Theory and Modeling.
