It could be that the language is poor and not precise, but the author either had intention to mud the water or lacks some writing skills.

BEIJING — Chinese state media say a North Korean boat has hijacked 29 Chinese fishermen on three separate boats and demanded 1.2 million yuan ($190,000) for their release.

Reading the bolded parts it is clea hijack and ransom scenario. Guess I am not the only one who read it that way.

Besides...why miss an opportunity to make fun of Cartman Kim and bash the Nork regime.... :)

The funny thing here is displaying indignation at the bashing.

In that case then gentlemen, have fun.

I was wondering if this event has anything to do with China publicly opposes NK's nuclear testing plan last few weeks? And again, if anybody has any in depth information to share about what was and is going on on maritime border between China and NK then it would be much appreciated.

Now that's an interesting question. Wouldn't put it past the NK regime to actually think such a thing would faze the Chinese.

According to another forum citing 'AFP' on twitter, there is a possibility that at least some of the hijackers are Chinese rather than North Korean.

One of the captured fishermen has supposedly confirmed it according to this source.

Could there be a possibility of non-state NK actors backed by weapons smuggled through China?

ANYTHING is possible in that part of the world, considering the bizarro world the Kim family has created and fostered.

It certainly wouldn't surprise me in the least.

For me the critical piece of information that is missing is the identity of the the hijackers/ransomers. Its hard to know what to think of this until we know who it is.

                    Cop out?

It quoted China’s Foreign Ministry as saying Wednesday it was aware of the situation and considered it a matter for the fisheries industry.

There's probably some table-pounding, foaming-at-the-mouth, chairs-being-hurled-through-windows going on in Beijing right now.

Right or wrong, an arrest is generally follow by some sort of court of law with paper works. I don't recall seeing the Chinese fishermen being charged with anything nor accompanied any court date-- That is the different ransom and bail bonds

They were then forced at gunpoint to sail into North Korean waters
North Koreans accused of holding Chinese fishermen for ransom - latimes.com

Please tell me why China has to protest every time their fishermen are arrested, even when they were far, far, far away from home?
Your will have a stronger argument if those fishermen have broken laws of a jurisdiction. One can not arrest people just because they are far far far away.

Sharing the overlapping with neighbors? According to Chinese media, the actual area under North Korean administration is even smaller, perhaps because of some agreements with China but I don't know.
