  • Has less to do with gender mainstreaming, and more actual gender equality - as in being able to simply redesignate the gender of an enlisted crew cabin whenever the current crew mix requires it.
(and that has more to do with the USN still stuffing up to 120 people into one cabin which have to use the head assigned to that...)

Plus supposedly the fact that the urinals were a maintenance nightmare.

I beg to differ - From the article I cited: Bathroom design experts say water closets with seated toilets are less sanitary and take up far more space than wall-mounted urinals. And will additionally take a lot more constant cleaning and wasted man/woman/it power as the article also stated. Any normal person who isn't blind can see that from any public restroom they use. Simply common sense. I see this every day at work where some men use the toilets instead of the urinals provided. Very nasty by the end of the day.

There were many reports that the low water use toilets aboard CVN 77 were easily clogged by paper towels causing some clogged and flooding issues. Good times!

I have not heard if the CVN's that are coming out of RCOH's if they are being ordered to be sabotaged in a similar fashion.

The problem isn't cleaning the bathrooms (that's part of normal duty...). The combination of urine and seawater results in heavy mineral buildup, which for the narrower pipes of urinals requires actual very regular maintenance.

            'green' isn't always good.....

you can only float so much s**t in 1.6 gallons (or less) of water......

are they actually using sea water for flushing?

Well if one were flushing paper towels then that would be a problem. Toilet tissue disintegrates while paper towels don't. They could clogged your sewer line at home.

Worked at a business where the owner would snake the pluming. He loved showing the calcium balls from the urinal piping.

                              • Been awhile since we touched this thread, but it sounds like the FORD is having problems with her propulsion system:
The Gerald R. Ford, the U.S. Navy’s costliest warship, suffered a new failure at sea that forced it back to port and raised fresh questions about the new class of aircraft carriers.

The previously undisclosed problem with a propulsion system bearing, which occurred in January but has yet to be remedied, comes as the Navy is poised to request approval from a supportive Congress to expedite a contract for a fourth carrier in what was to have been a three-ship class. It’s part of a push to expand the Navy’s 284-ship fleet to 355 as soon as the mid-2030s.
First in class with lots of new technology always has problems. From the article, they are calling it a manufacturing defect in a 'bearing', but it almost sounds like a fault in the reduction gearing from the story itself. Not sure if the FORD has reduction gearing.....
