Has less to do with gender mainstreaming, and more actual gender equality - as in being able to simply redesignate the gender of an enlisted crew cabin whenever the current crew mix requires it.
(and that has more to do with the USN still stuffing up to 120 people into one cabin which have to use the head assigned to that...)

Plus supposedly the fact that the urinals were a maintenance nightmare.

I beg to differ - From the article I cited: Bathroom design experts say water closets with seated toilets are less sanitary and take up far more space than wall-mounted urinals. And will additionally take a lot more constant cleaning and wasted man/woman/it power as the article also stated. Any normal person who isn't blind can see that from any public restroom they use. Simply common sense. I see this every day at work where some men use the toilets instead of the urinals provided. Very nasty by the end of the day.

There were many reports that the low water use toilets aboard CVN 77 were easily clogged by paper towels causing some clogged and flooding issues. Good times!

I have not heard if the CVN's that are coming out of RCOH's if they are being ordered to be sabotaged in a similar fashion.

The problem isn't cleaning the bathrooms (that's part of normal duty...). The combination of urine and seawater results in heavy mineral buildup, which for the narrower pipes of urinals requires actual very regular maintenance.

Well if one were flushing paper towels then that would be a problem. Toilet tissue disintegrates while paper towels don't. They could clogged your sewer line at home.

Worked at a business where the owner would snake the pluming. He loved showing the calcium balls from the urinal piping.
