            Connecting some of the dots....

USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) suffered an engineering casualty and is tied up at pier near the Pacific side of the Panama Canal in Balboa, the former US Navy Station Rodman.

Balboa is operated by Panama Ports Co., a subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa Limited, an investment holding company based in Hong Kong.

Hutchison Whampoa Limited gained control of former US Naval stations at both ends of the canal in 1997.

Hutchison Whampoa Limited is a legitimate international conglomerate, but with communist Chinese influence/control, and reputedly provides cover for Chinese military intelligence.

My limited understanding is that most everything on Zumwalt is attached to an ethernet network, and is controlled by software running on virtual servers on IBM blade computer hardware, and operated from common computer workstations runing Linux on COTS/MOTS hardware, with everything communicating thru VPN tunnels on the ethernet network.

I expect that this will put Zumwalt's computer network security to a vigorous test, not unlike using explosive blasts to shock test the hardware.

              • Blast testing ....

An interesting recital of the legacy about the Panama Canal.

A curious opportunity for the Chinese to test the security of this DDG will no doubt be played out in the coming months ?? years ??? as technology continues to evolve and security constantly changes.

Perhaps the new administration will focus on working with the French or Middle Eastern power, may Mother Russia, to restart the effort to build a "2nd canal". Oh, this has great conspiracy threads in the future about a backdoor deal to fund a canal, in the meantime, Hang tough USN !

I don't understand, tbh. Afaik, the 1000 never had an serious AAA or ASW component, it was always anti-surface, land or sea. So... "refocus"?

It was previously decided it would be a land attack focused vessel. Now apparently, it will now be a bit of an anti-ship “cruiser.”

Yes, tough to do the land attack mission when you have a gun without any rounds. From the article above, even if Excalibur were to replace the original round, it's estimated to cost $250 million to make the change, which will really end up costing $500M. Then another $140M to buy a sufficient number of rounds for the ships.

                              That's a lot of money....
