  • Will Post Office cutbacks kill the weekly magazines?

Buried in an article about the proposed PO cutbacks, I saw this:

First-class mail is supposed to arrive at U.S. homes and businesses in one to three days; about 42 percent of it arrives in one day. The cutbacks will back up deliveries to two to three days; periodicals could take up to nine days.
Postal cutbacks to delay 1st-class mail - BusinessWeek

So, as an uninteded consequence, could magazines like Time, Newsweek, and other weeklies go under? They are already on the ropes, this could be the knockout punch. I mean, who wants a news magazine nine days + after the events have occured?

This whole thing may be a Washington Monument gambit, so called because the Park Service when facing budget cuts would always say they might have to close monuments and parks if their budget was cut. They got their money.

In the middle of this economic mess, Americans will feel a deep loss if their local post offices are closed, and it doesn't help that all those jobs would be lost. I say turn them all into casinos...:)

Probably not, but their rates may go up. On-line book and CD/DVD sellers will be hit hardest. They depend on 'media mail' rates which are ridiculously low. For 3.99 you can send a heavy book anywhere in the country or several books for 4.99. Congress makes them do it. Contrast that to $15 and up for a 4 lb package depending on where in the country you're sending it. And the USPS handles a lot of books and media shipments.

Ouch, the books costing 15$ to ship would hurt

Government agencies need to stop paying people not to work. Cutting back services will drive more people toward online bill paying and email services. In the end, there will be less revenue to pay for an ever growning number of retirees. Our government pension system is near collapse. They need to pay their fair share just like those of us in the private sector.

I think of several as three or more but less than 10. Maybe others have a different take. But over 2, for sure.

So I can send 9 Guinness World Records, or Encyclopedia Britannica for the amount of 1 National Geographic (or Playboy if you wish)?

I don't think it will pose a problem to them. If the mails slows down a day or two I doubt too many people will be upset. Plus, they could always just mail out issues a bit sooner for them to arrive on the appropriate date.

Didn't Time or Newsweek or one of them already switch over to an entirely digital format and stop printing?
