  • A while back Navy Doc asked if I could help find some parts in Suisun some dealing with the engines. Unfortunately, it seems that the manager up there is not returning our phone calls or emails for some reason after letting us up there in February. A shame since I know where some of those parts are on the Holland.

Head aft and take a pic of the smoke generators please.

Well whenever im on board I bring my camera ;) And are you referring to the ones that would have been in between the Debth Charge Racks? If so; we dont have them.. Main Deck Plan (Take a look at that its a great Deck layout ofr the enitre ship btw!)

Also to me that definitely seems like a good model in my opinion!

Ohh and just remembered I never posted the picutres from the last saturday I was there :O (Was not there the 9th due to taking the ACT's)

              • Not all DD's and DE's carried smoke generators. On those I worked on back in the mid 50's when I was an apprentice shipfitter were wierd looking. They look like one of those fan shaped water hose sprayers but bigger. The smoke pipe comes up vertical through the deck and then makes a 45 degree turn pointing the nozzles aft. From what I recall, there were two of them only 4 to 6 feet forward of the fantail.

It was unusual to still have ships with the smoke generators on board as RADAR was improving so well that smoke screens were useless in hiding the fleet.
Able to leap tall tales in a single groan.

I can't add any pictures of a smoke generator, but the description from Warren Deppe, Torpedoman, USS Dale in the Battle of Komandorski Island, "Tales of a Tin Can" being added to the Fletcher Thread recites the following....

"I was on Number 1 torpedo tube and the gun director was running the numbers and angles for a possible torpedo attack. Then I got orders to go back and start the smoke generators on the fantail. Down in the engine room they sprayed bunker crude under pressure onto a superheated plate, and that made a real thick blanket of smoke. On the fantail we used two kinds of generators that mixed two kinds of chemicals together for a thick white smoke."

                  • A little info from the Slater's site about about Smoke Generators atleast -
Originally, DEs had two chemical smoke generators between the racks for laying down a covering smoke screen. Each of these consisted of four steel cylinders nested horizontally between the depth charge racks. These were later replaced by a diesel oil smoke generator located below deck due to the toxicity of the chemical smoke. The brass cap to the diesel tanks is still in place.

                    • The Stewart DE-238 down in Galveston has her smoke generator on board. It's in the after steering compartment against the aft bulkhead. The opening to the deck is currently blanked and the nozzle piece that mounts on deck is stored in there as well. The nozzle resembles a large fan type sprayer head for a hose. Sort of like: Amazon.com: Orbit Metal Fan Spray With On/Off Hose Spray Nozzle 58297 only much, much larger. One of the weekends I worked down there as a volunteer was spent cleaning out that after steering compartment. which is why I got a good look at it. I thought it would be fun to fire up some time, but would likely piss some environmentalists off.

                        • Was onboard again yesterday - 2012 USS Slater June 30th pictures by qaz14595 - Photobucket

Helped start that Rope fender thing for for a little at first. Then it became chow time & after that the person I was helping ended up having to give a tour. So then I ended up going down to the Engine room where my dad was working with one of the engineers. Where I ended up cleaning the fuel line face's (I think thats what it is called ;) ) So when they put on the gasket's it will have a better seal.

Also they hope to have it Running sometime in the Fall!!! I just hope i can be there for that!

(The hat helps to emphasize just how masive the connecting rod, piston & the fuel injector is!)

                              • Do I not see two more pieces of brass in that picture. One, a bell, and the other looks like a sound powered phone outlet but with a brass cap as seen on sea plugs.
