The only place I could locate was already mentioned- Maritime pro's. But I did find this reference book online if it's anything to you: The Fleet Type Submarine - Main Propulsion Diesels
Apparently the same plant was in wide use on submarines as well, but from the look of the type work you have done and the progress you've made, I'd have to say you are well beyond training manuals...

Back when I said I would not miss the next ship's movement, I had no thoughts of daylight savings time! So, who would have thought.....Sunday, 0530, muster!
So, I have to be up at 3...no that would be 2.....
leave at 4 for the 85 minute drive .....no... you better leave at 3! You haven't changed the clock yet...or did you turn it ahead when you got up at 3 ....or was that 2???
      I'm already confused!!
Arrive at 0525. But, very few people are awake. Did they turn the clocks ahead before they went to bed?? The tugs are scheduled to push us away at 0700. Or, are they going to show up at 6 ...which is really 7 ...by my clock (now) ...or did they remember????
Sure, just to add insult to confusion ...they're early .... it's only 0630 ...or is it really 0530??
      Damn, it's cold and dark!

Yeah very few people where there at first...even Tim was not the frist person there (he got there when me and my dad did at like 5:20) & that resulted in a wait for the coffee to be done too!
Luckly for me/my dad is we stayed at a motel 6 in Albany about 15 mins away - so no two hour dirve to get there atleast.

Also i just realized that i forgot to share the picutres so here they are! - 2012 USS Slater March 11th Move pictures by qaz14595 - Photobucket

                Re: Emergency drinking water;
A few miles west of Flagstaff, Arizona is the Grand Canyon Caverns. Several years ago we visited the Caverns (as well as the Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater and Petrified Forest -- not all in one day of course). The Caverns were not created by underground water and had far different features. It is extraordinarily dry. Though we entered through a walk-in opening, there was a hole in the ceiling going up dozens of feet. There was a dead Fox lying at the bottom and looked like it hadn't been there for more than a week or so. But it remained mummified for at least 10 years because of the dryness of the Caverns.

Also, a large room of the Caverns was stacked high with hundreds of crates of emergency food rations and emergency drinking water. All property of the US Government. It was a perfect place for such storage that even though everything was sealed, being in a cool and totally humidity free cave added more longevity to the storage.
Able to leap tall tales in a single groan.

I am going to enlist everyone here on this "treasure hunt"! The more people you ask, the better the chance!
Our engineers are diving into the rebuilds of the ship's 4 main engines. Yes, we will have her "haze gray and underway". It has been quietly and covertly in the unwritten plan. Now, it is coming to the surface. Even the curator has figured it out! This little excerpt is from the latest news letter:
"Down in the aft diesel space, B-3, the engineers have started on the cosmetic restoration of their first main engine, number 4. I say cosmetic, but they are also on the hunt for a complete gasket replacement set for a Cleveland 16-278A. Who knows what those engineers have in mind."

So, if anyone has "any" ideas where to look for or find gaskets sets for GM 16-278A's, PLEASE shout out!
Well...The March eddition of the newsletter is up! Here is the link - Plan of the Day - March 24, 2012

Also the reason why I quoted that thing Doc said about a month ago -

Gus Negus, Karl Herchenroder, Mike Dingmon and Gary Lubrano continue their work on the overhaul of number four main engine. I am now convinced that the engine will run one day. They have been making repairs left over from her days in Greek service, going through the cylinder heads one at a time. Gary Dieckman generously offered to buy them two sets of head gaskets and they are in search of an injector setting tool for a GM-278A engine. If you have such a tool lying around your shop or ship, would you mind loaning it to our engineers?
So if you have or know of someone who has a injector setting tool for a GM-278A engine let us know!

Helped Erik put the yellow lables you see on the boxes for our invitory of blue chambray shirts then painted the white under the door frame in sick bay. Then Lastly shots from up on the Flying bridge of where i started chipping paint.

That was the Friday I was there & more chipping on the Flying Bridge with my dad once again! As you can see there was a near full small bucket full of rust that was collected. Along with a neat older(ish) navy poster I saw while on the serch for a vacuum. (Any one happen to have any info in regards to that poster?)

(P.S the concrete you see was put there by the greeks to stop a leak by the stuffing tubes & thats another persons project of removing btw)

                            • Don't you just hate that? The Navy put so much paint down without ever scrapping off the older paint. The corners where the decks meet the splinter shields and the vertical braces are notorious for paint buildup. Once water gets inside it eats away silently until the day you chisel it out and there are holes right through the steel everywhere. There are places on the Hornet where the paint layers were 10 layers deep. I kid you not as it was like counting tree rings for age. One area I just did was signals, O6 level, port side were some equipment had that many layers.

                              • Yeahh, But atleast a fair amount of places have very few layers of paint now! But they have found paint chips 60 sometihng thick even! Along with i remember hearing how they also found a sponn & a few other various things inisde a glob of paint a few years ago even. Lucky there havent been that many holes found ;) but if you happend to notice in the picutre looking at the starboard syk lookout area you can see how the greeks just put a layer or two of steel above who knows what...

Also the April newsletter has been up & heres the link - http://www.ussslater.org/publication...ss-v15-04.html

Talks about the visit by Rear Admiral David Titley, assistant deputy chief of Naval Operations for Information Dominance, the endless chock project, our problems may be over, James River Reserve Fleet trip, Down in the bilges, We are moving forward with plans to open up the aft machinery spaces for limited visitation, & along with a few other various things that happend in April (Inculdes some great picutres! )

Along with the update on the main Engine -

The engineers continue to progress with the overhaul of main engine number four. Karl Herchenroder, Gus Negus, Mike Dingmon and Gary Lubrano continue to demonstrate that they don't know the meaning of "cosmetic restoration." They gave me a list of about $2,000 of parts that they wanted for the engine. When I said that was kind of hard to justify in light of our tight financial condition and the fact that we weren't going anywhere soon, they whittled it down to $100 of fuel line gaskets from Hatch and Kirk. Gary Dieckman came to their rescue and donated two complete gasket sets that they needed. Down in Long Island, Herb Dahlhouse located the injector timing tool that they needed, so that saved another $75. I just hope they remember to uncover the exhaust pipe when they get ready to start the engine
