The best way to keep these treasures alive is to use them!

By using our museum ships and their equipment on a regular basis, we keep them alive and surviving! Non-use and static displays have a habit of deteriorating quicker! In that realm, we regularly use the galley and mess deck for what they were intended for! This past Monday the veteran crew were treated to a feast of a lunch by Chief Smith! mmmmm....Roast Beef and all the fixins!
There were some non-regulation head gear being worn!

Yeah, Erik found me a shirt.
Also Erik has been having me work in the Mess Deck/ scullery area. On the 27th with my dad took down the 6 racks in the mess deck moved them into forward berthing, covered the Fridge & the thing with the cups, plates & serving trays in plastic, then moved that toaster that was ontop of that into forward berthing too. Then My dad, Erik & I vacuumed the 2 fire hoses that where by the mesdeck Strainer & put them next to the toaster too. Then did needle gunning on the table legs for the 4 mess deck tables, while my dad did some grinding on where the Bench legs used to be connected so they where flush with the deck.

On the 30th I finished the needle gunning on the table legs while my dad worked on taking out the vent stuff that was under the Sink in the Scullery.

Then yesterday, did needle gunning around the frame where the mesh like stuff was in the scullery then put the coroseal on it. Then with my dad, Bill W., Erik & I we moved the vent stuff out to the Rear main passage way & a piece shore side next to the gangway. Finaly I learned how to use a grinder on some welding marks behind where the racks are normaly are. Also when I get upthere next I think il doing grinding on table legs to get rid of random welding marks on them before painting them.

Great job. I see the face shield and the dust mask. I hope you are also wearing earplugs while using the needle gun and grinder.

Your young. You will need your hearing for a few more years

Earplugs are nice. Keeping an eye on the stereo volume is also nice.

In some situations earplugs and aural protection together work well.

Exactly. Wear both if you can. But earplugs alone will provide more protection than those ear muffs on that table.

Ear muffs usually provide 21-30db noise reduction. If worn correctly. You are moving around. Have hair that prevents a good seal and are also wearing a "round the head" face shield which also interferes with good fit.

In the ear foam plugs provide 29db protection regardless of how you are moving, how long your hair is or other outside influences. All around better protection in a constant high noise environment.

Muffs are better for sharp impulse noise, like the rifle range.

Just a bit of advice from someone that has worn hearing aids, and suffered from tinnitus, since his mid 30s. I learned to late that I was not wearing the right type of protection. Learn from your elders.

Geez, I guess you guys were indeed busy in the mess! I almost didn't recognize where I was! And, all that needle gun work today on the deck had my head throbbing! I think we will have to install a plug dispenser at the gangway for everyone! Between the needling and the metal cutting, welding and grinding a person can't even hear themselves think! It was a little crowded at lunch in the Chief's mess!
Ahhh, but it is grand! Gotta love it! Breathes life into the ship and her crew with all that work going on!

Yes we have been quite busy in there! & Indeed it definitely helps keep her alive with all that work going on!

Hopefully I can talk my dad into geting me/him back up there this Saturday (Or Monday due to the holiday & no school then!) Mainly want to get there on a Monday in order to meet Clark!!! Then be able to get a picture with him too. With him being the oldest active volunteer at 89 or 90 & with me being the ?youngest?!?(I think) active volunteer at 16! What a great picture that would be!

It's hard to pin him down and get an accurate age! But, today we believe Chief Farnsworth turned 90! If you are there on Monday an he is too, be sure to address him as Chief!

Re: Our 90 year old Chief Farnsworth!

The Chief turned 90 last week! But, that means there's just more work to be done! Here he is last week making weld repairs to a water tight door!
