Yelp, I'm travelling next week and might get a couple of spare hours to stop at the Kalamazoo museum and peek underneath their Wildcat to check out the IFF lights....

The TBM has the three covered over with patches screwed on. No problem as I long ago located three correct NOS lights to put back in.

      • We are down to one male in administration now. One quit last week despite the request to say he was retiring. He is going back to Security to get away from the BS on 2nd deck.

Was wandering a sponson yesterday and saw a very nice bomb loader stored there along with a nice Navy Buda 8 cylinder diesel engine for display. When I asked about them I find out that both were on the blocks for throwing in the dumpster along with the, get this, the cradle for the captain's gig. Only a quick phone call to the last man in administration, in Nevada at the time (uh huh), stopped them from going into the trash.

        • What's with the purge? IIRC you said that woman was clearing some rooms out for offices or something but damn just stick those in another room its not like there not enough space. As always thank you for your sacrifice tbm!

          • I know tbm can give us the "inside story" of what's going on, but I've been having issues with their front office for the last year or so; in years past, my Boy Scout Troop has done the overnighter thing onboard the ship on average every other year, and the front office (well, the Live Aboard staff, anyway) has always been very accommodating and helpful to us in the past. However, I've been trying to schedule another overnighter for at least a year, and I definitely get the feeling we're not welcome, for whatever reason.

Part of the reason we participated was because we could go onboard Saturday morning when they open (10:00 AM) and get a Merit Badge during the day (either Aviation or Radio), and then just stay onboard for the Live-Aboard overnighter program. However, I keep being told that they are having problems finding certified Merit Badge Counselors, and they can't even give me a tentative date as to when they might have a Merit Badge session available. Very frustrating. It USED to be easy getting my Troop signed up for this stuff, but now it's like pulling teeth, so we'll probably do the Pampanito this year instead. Too bad, too; I used to really like spending time on the Hornet, especially during the day when the Scouts were all doing their Merit Badge, and I could wander around the ship all day.

What BS. The requirement to become a merit badge counselor per BSA National is you fill out an Adult application, pass the Youth Protection Training & back ground checks. No one has to certify the adult. Heck, one of the adults in the troop can do it while a docent does the actual teaching.

              That is just straight BS.

Yeah, I know; I'm the Scoutmaster for the local Boy Scout Troop in my town, and a registered Merit Badge Counselor for Archery, Aviation, Digital Technology (the old Computers MB), and First Aid Merit Badges.

The only reason I'm all spun up about this at all is because the last few times we've done these courses, it's WAY more interesting when you can have an (ex) F-14 pilot teaching your Aviation Merit Badge class, or an old Navy RM (Radioman) teaching your Radio MB class. They supposedly offer Space Exploration onboard the ship, also, but it seems like it's only offered once or twice a year (it must be harder finding a Space Exploration MB Counselor), so we've never taken that MB.

Right now, their website says: "Our Education Department’s STEM team is currently working on becoming certified BSA instructors. At the moment, they may be able to provide Aviation and Space Exploration merit badge workshops upon advance request but will otherwise be posting workshop information later in the year on our Upcoming Events Calendar page." Well, they've been "working" on becoming certified BSA instructors for about a year now, so I have no idea when they might actually start offering Merit Badges again (if at all). And I HAVE been "advance requesting" Merit Badges, but nobody ever gets back to me. AND their "Event Calendar" only goes a month or two out for the "Youth Group Live-Aboard Overnight", so it makes it hard to plan ahead. Frustrating.

Just seems like it used to be more organized a few years ago.

                  • Stitch, it sounds like they are giving you the run around. Has anyone brought this up to Council? Like get the Council Executive to get in bed with the Navy league and other folks to bring pressure to bear? Saw that work here in Richmond regarding a few sites.

                    • A European produced video on the USS Hornet. Actually pretty good compared to some I have seen.

                      • Sitich you need to get in touch with me. I was on the ship today and ran into the person who handles the overnights. I mentioned that there were some comments about the ship concerning the Boy Scouts and that it would be a good idea to straighten things out. Does the PM system even work???

                        • A short video on our SH-3H Sea King by Joe Martinez our helicopter specialist. Did both the HUP and the Sea King. Also a great artist and is filling a 3rd deck compartment with the Squadron art from yesteryear. I believe he said there were 50-60 to paint.

                          • Some of the squadron art in process from last year. Saw him today and he told me another five are finished so I have to go with my camera again.

                            • An artistic aerial view of the Hornet. Posted 9/1/2016 but I can tell it was shot 3-4 years ago.

Ah ha someone borrowed the original video seen here.

                              • Another one, with some former crew members, that actually gives credit where it should really go. Captain Jim Dodge NAS Alameda Commander, 1995.
