The Canadian government has announced that a $35 billion ship building project, including the largest military expenditure since the second world war.The shipyards of Halifax won a $25 billion contract for 21 Naval ships, while Vancouver won an $8 billion contract to build 8 non combat ships. There was three cities in competition for these two contracts, the loser city was Quebec City, who was shut out from the big contracts. However, they can still bid on a $2 billion contract to build smaller non-combat vessels.
This is amazing news for the People of Nova Scotia, as the maritime provinces have had a long history of its young people leaving home to find work in other provinces due to lack of employment opportunities on the east coast. With this contract, the people of Nova Scotia can now put down roots and stay in the province!
This is also great news for Canada's sovereign claim over its Arctic Archipelago. The military ship contract includes new patrol ships that will be capable of patrolling the arctic. Along with the military implications, this contract will add a second engine alongside the Tar Sands that fuels Canada's domestic economy, which was critical in helping Canada survive the global recession relatively unscathed.
