  • I agree with the pundits. Best for him to get all the facts out now. The story isn't going away, and even if it dies down awhile, it will resurface in Iowa.

    • I am not a tax expert and all, but one thing that confuse me greatly ...

      A. Isn't the bracket system only a very marginal part of the current codes' complexity? isn't the complexity much more to do with the different taxes and their deductables? If we go by what Steve Forbes write in that article, that we have just A SINGLE tax with just one basic deductable that accounts for all types of Income, then would it really matter if that Single tax was flat or not?

      B. Of course, vice versa is also true, if we do NOTHING to the tax code today and ONLY change we make is to end the bracket system so we have just one bracket for all... isn't the complexity still mostly there since you still have all sorts of capital gain tax / state tax / payroll tax and a deductable rule that can fill an encyclodpiedia?

Having pointed this out, it seems that at least to me, the fixation on the "Flat" part seems to be rather weird, I'm all for simplifying tax code but at least to me the flat part of it seem to get focused on way too much and not the other parts. and given the US's constitution to make what Steve Forbes wrote work the USA FIRST have to make a Constitution Amendments that cancel the right for States to tax, which will go realllll well I'm sure.

As Mitt Romeny pointed out in his debate at vegas with Cain, 999 sounds great but add the State tax aspect into it and it becomes much less so. (Cain's apples and orange response was very dissapointing, doesn't sound like he has this part thought through at all)

      • Some of the taxes American individuals pay (source: [http://www.goodcitizen.org/wwla%20bo...s%20email.htm])

        Alcohol
        Boat registration and sales
        Capital gains
        Dog license
        Driver’s license
        Federal Income
        Fishing
        Fuel (various)
        Hunting
        Inheritance
        Luxury (various)
        Marriage license
        Medicare
        Property (various)
        Road tolls, tunnels and bridges
        RV
        Sales
        Septic permit (some states)
        Social Security
        State Income (some)
        Telephone
        Tobacco
        Unemployment
        Vechicle registration and sales
        Workers compensation

The next time someone tells you that fewer than half of Americans pay taxes, tell 'em there's probably a tax on that.

        • lol Marriage and Dog licence?

Some of those are user pay fees though. and some are essentially preferential sales taxes (Alchohals and Gas for example)

Also, if they really simplify the tax code by that much, an entire industry of tax lawyers / accountants will be unemployed :P not to meantion 90% of the IRS workers :P though I guess corperate tax would still be pretty complex as long as you need to define what is cost and what is not.

          • Cue torrent of personal abuse agianst this woman & more mumblings about 'high tech lynching'. Cain has already taken hits on this & he will continue to hurt. I suspect the Cain Train is running off the tracks.

A woman Monday broke her silence to accuse Republican presidential contender Herman Cain of sexually groping her in a car, when she asked him for help in finding a new job in 1997.

Sharon Bialek became the first woman to go public with her accusations, amid swirling accusations by four women of sexual harassment by Cain, who is vying to be crowned the Republican Party’s nominee for the 2012 elections.

The woman alleges she was sexually harassed by Cain “when she sought his help with an employment issue” when he was head of the National Restaurant Association in the mid-1990s, her lawyer, Gloria Allred, said in a statement.

A public airing could create more turmoil for Cain, who is trying to put the harassment allegations behind him and get his campaign back on track.

Cain, a former pizza company executive with no experience in political office, has been leading many opinion polls in the race to become the Republican presidential nominee to face Democratic President Barack Obama in next year’s election.

The latest development comes just two days before Republican candidates gather in Rochester, Michigan, on Wednesday night for the latest in a series of campaign debates.

At least three other women have accused Cain of sexual harassment from his time as the restaurant industry’s top lobbyist in the mid-1990s. Cain, 65, insists the claims are baseless and that he was wrongfully accused.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Sunday showed the percentage of Republicans who viewed Cain favorably dropped 9 percentage points, to 57 percent from 66 percent a week ago.

The survey was the first evidence that sexual harassment claims against Cain have taken a toll on his presidential aspirations.

A woman who received a cash settlement from the restaurant association in response to her harassment claim rejected Cain’s denials on Friday. She said through her lawyer she was the victim of a “series of inappropriate behaviors and unwanted advances” by Cain in 1999.

One of Cain’s Republican presidential adversaries called on Sunday for more information on the allegations.

“It has got to come out in total,” Republican presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “Legitimate questions have been raised and that information has to come forward.”

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul said on “Fox News Sunday” that the media went too far in covering the allegations, distracting voters from more important issues.

“The media blew this way out of proportion,” Paul said. “There are a thousand stories out there and I think that dilutes the real debates, because (Cain’s) views on foreign policy for instance are dramatically different than mine.” (Additional reporting by Steve Holland in Washington; Editing by Peter Cooney)

            • Here's what I don't get: Why are these people such idiots?! Why is it that every single politician seems to have a sex skeleton in his closet, and more importantly, why do they think that in today's day and age they can keep that skeleton hidden?! Seriously, are there any big politicians or contenders out there that haven't sexually assaulted or harassed someone? And then they wonder why people think politicians are scum

About half of income tax filers don't pay federal income tax.

No one here ever said half of Americans don't pay taxes.

Most of the stuff on your list is optional "consumption" tax.

That's the brilliance of these politicians. They formulate a "progressive" income tax to get the rich while letting the poor get off without paying any income tax. Then they formulate all these consumption taxes in the form of fees and "sin tax" to get the poor. More poor people smoke and drink than rich people. Have you seen the level of cigarette tax in the states? It's ridiculous.

Lotto is a tax on the poor and mathematically challenged. Rich people don't buy Lotto. At least based on the profile of the winners, rich people never win.

Answer: Huge ego coupled with an entitlement mentality and the maturity level of a 5 year old bully that holds the eternal philosophy that even if others are caught it would never happen to them. Question: How do you define American politicians?

You'll agree with me that looking at a porno website and sexually harassing someone are world's apart? Politicians are not being accused of looking at porno websites.
