  • China army chief on 'historic' visit to Israel

I really don't expect any actual military transfer/sells during this visit.

AFP: China army chief on 'historic' visit to Israel
JERUSALEM — China's army chief was due to arrive in Israel on Sunday for talks with top defence officials, the Israeli military said.

The Israel Defence Forces said China's "Chief of the General Staff, General Chen Bingde... will meet senior security officials and attend strategic and security briefings, visit the IDF Urban Warfare Training Centre, and observe a display of IDF forces training."

The Israeli military declined to say how long Chen would be in the country.

Israeli army radio, describing the visit as "historic" said Chen was to meet Defence Minister Ehud Barak late on Sunday.

In June, Barak made a rare visit to Beijing for talks with Chinese leaders, at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Liang Guanglie.

Defence ties had been frosty after US intervention twice scuttled Israeli arms deals with China: the sale of advanced Phalcon spy planes in 2000 and of spare parts for Israeli-built Harpy drones five years later.

Chen's visit comes as Israel seeks to convince the international community to vote against a bid by the Palestinians for recognition of a state at the UN General Assembly in September.

Israel has in the past also sought tougher measures from Beijing, a key UN Security Council member, against Iran's controversial nuclear programme.

At this point, how much can Israel offer China? And it's not like China is willing to sell anything sensitive to Israel, assuming that there's anything Tel Aviv could possibly want from China.

Since both parties agreed to this visit there must be something both sides want/need from the other. The question o/c is what is that?

Israel is still amongst the world leaders when it comes to defense technology, and China knows this. China, on the other hand, as everyone can attest to, is becoming one of the largest partners on the world stage. If Israel has China backing her, she can then sell more hardware to China and not have to worry about the US has to say, and alternatively, China can use her influence in her political sphere to support Israel politically.

Not a match made in heaven, as Israel is still heavily tied to the US, but a marriage of convenience, or at the very least, friends with benefits

actually rather large number of exchanges -- ranging from missile guidance (most of PLAAF's AAMs are based on Israeli design) , radar, large cal tank ammos to command&control. Just to name a few.

Yes, there will not be any sensitive, not in public.

The caveat is that China won't get too much involved with ME politics as she stated publicly. China wants oil and trade, nothing more.

This may very well be true, but China could still show some support without getting too entrenched.

The Chinese government is not known for its charity (what's in it for me?), lets see what develops after this.
