  • Why is everything "Joint" these days?

Just about everything new from the military these days is "joint" something.

    Joint STAR
    Joint Direct Attack Munition
    Joint Stand Off Weapon
    Joint Strike Fighter
    Joint Chiefs of Staff

Is this a subconscious desire to smoke a...joint?

I suppose it's better than "disjointed."

All those Vietnam vets who became generals are bitter about the "not in MY Army!" policies that came out when they were boots fresh out of college.

      Budgetary concerns.

If one service arm wants something, it has to compete with the others and may win or lose at the expense of another service arm’s project. By being a joint project, there are at least two voices in favor, which increases the odds of success (and, may lower overall costs).

Same for development of say, fighter planes. Multiple countries involved in the production make it harder to kill the project and easier to find buyers.

      IMHO.

The Goldwater-Nichols Act. PL 99-33. Goldwater-Nichols was the result of a study commissioned by President Reagan to bring an end to inter-service rivalries that have plagued the Defense Department since day one. Now, to get promoted you need "joint" command experience. To get funded, a project needs "joint" applications and so on. That's not all bad, especially when we need to be tightening the budget.

Why is everything "Joint" these days?

          Good question!
Financially I would say it makes sense (in most cases)
But how many of these "Joint" projects mature or materialise into operational hardware???
They never seem to work if the services are forced to comply / participate!!

I very much like the idea/concept, but in the U.S military case, service rivalry needs to be eliminated!!!

Well, I am Jay - so thats why they want to use J in thier most fearsome weapons names

                      HookahDAM ?

but of course the JDAM is far scarier to would be enemies of our Nation - having Jay damn them - best to abandon all hope, howl mournfully, swallow poison and fall on their sword - quick before he gets there;)

Secret international treaties have forbidden the explict use of the fearful term "Jay" in weapons, so the word Joint was substituted to implictly allude to the true horror of the actual meaning of the weapons names.
