  • Crewman Kills Officer On Great Britain's Newest Submarine

This was an incredibly disturbing story. Apparently a British naval crewman of H.M.S. Astute posted to sentry duty opened fire with an automatic weapon in the control room of the submarine and killed Lt. Cmdr. Ian Molyneux and wounded one other watch officer while moored in Southampton. The weapon was wrested away by a visiting municipal official, Royston Smith (a former RAF flight engineer) after a tussle.

Apparently the incident stemmed from a dispute over the use of a submarine toilet.

Over twelve British schoolchildren happened to be dockside awaiting an opportunity to board the vessel for a tour.

    Stunning-

This is tragic. We will have to wait for the official statement to find out what happened. What caused this crewmember to turn on an Officer and shoot him dead? To think it was a toilet issue, and that's it, is baffling. There has to be an underlying serious issue yet to come out.

(BBC) He has been officially charged with killing one Officer and the attempted murder of three others

Tragic, and very sad, my sympathies to the victim's families.

Truly shocking. Condolences to Lt. Cmdr Molyneux's family. Hoping for a speedy recovery for the wounded watch officer.

I hate to ask this, but in recent years has there been general discipline and morale problems in the RN?

LONDON (AP) - Police charged a Royal Navy sailor on Sunday with murdering an officer aboard a British nuclear-powered submarine.

Able Seaman Ryan Donovan, 22, is also charged with the attempted murder of three other crew on HMS Astute.

Lt. Cmdr. Ian Molyneux, the sub's weapons engineer, was shot dead Friday while the submarine was docked in the southern English port of Southampton.

Another officer was seriously wounded before the gunman was disarmed by fellow sailors and visiting dignitaries.

As well as the murder charge, Donovan is charged with attempting to kill Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Hodge, Petty Officer Christopher Brown and Chief Petty Officer David McCoy. Officials have not said which of the three is the wounded man.

Officials say the incident was not related to terrorism, but have not disclosed a possible motive for the attack.

Donovan is due to appear in court Monday in Southampton, 75 miles (120 kilometers) south of London.

The 1 billion pound ($1.6 billion) Astute is one of Britain's fleet of 11 nuclear-powered submarines. Its short career has been dogged by problems. Originally due to enter service in 2005, it began active duty in 2010, years behind schedule and millions of dollars over budget.

In October, it hit rocks and ran aground near the Isle of Skye off the west coast of Scotland. It was stuck for several hours until it was towed to safety. The vessel's commander was later removed from his post.

*Unthinkable that this would happen aboard a RN submarine. RIP to those lost. A toilet issue? This dont sound right.

When I first saw this my initial reaction was, "Another Astute incident?!?" This poor boat is really having more than its fair share of incidents. Terrible tragedy.

By "Launch" I asume you mean the extremely sloooooow roll out and lowering via the ship lift into the basin in front of the Devonshire Dock Hall. Yeah, thats about as boring a ship launch as is possible.

I wonder how an able seaman got access to live ammo, an automatic rifle and the bridge aboard an operational RN nuclear sub during a tour for school children, aren't weapons restricted more than that?

Close quarters, stressful duty on subs. Hate to hear these stories.

We had a sub guy go haywire in Bremerton a few years back.

yeah, sub duties are quiet risky in that sense, but how did he get the gun? I've served on ships and there's no real way a private should be able to get his hand on a gun unless someone messed up big time.... or he brought it from the outside, but that didn't sound like the case...
