My question was...
"Given that armor appears to be losing out to cheap armor-piercing munitions, what is the future of the MBT? And what will replace it?"
The question on the Iowa vs. the Exocet/harpoon - I really didn't know, but I suspect the ship, despite its armor, would be cut in two and sink. Which is apparently why naval armor has been abandoned in favor of speed and long-ranged, accurate firepower... and the super long reach of naval aviation.
The M-1 in Iraq that was apparently penetrated by a next-gen RPG...
Army times excerpt
Old news here I'm sure, but if the Abrams can be defeated by the modern equivalent of a Panzerfaust, the future of the MBT must be in doubt.

The question was asked of the IOWA after the Argentine successes with the EXOCET in the Falklands. The answer? The seamen would be extremely p!ssed off to having to sweep that mess off the decks. The ship was designed with WWII kamikaze carrying bombs and burning fuel in mind.
LCol Robel did a study of this
The Evolution and Relative Effectiveness of the Interim Brigade Combat Team
While not an argument closer, it does point to large flaws within the lighter armour theory.

Not sure how this all came back to me , as I agree maybe not yet but the days of the Tank as we know it are numbered, and I have said that.

I am sure you are right, but I am also sure there is a cost equation in there also.

As you say old news, Tanks have always been very vulnerable since they first rumbled onto the Battlefield back in the day, hell even Molotov cocktails hell even mud has stopped them, and if its not some sneaky grunt then the Engineers (if they had the time) became dam efficient with things like anti-tank ditches didnt even need explosives to stop them, Tanks need as much protection at times as they afford others, but times are definately changing............ one thing they always did supply in abundance was confidence, dash and panache and dam good looking commanders and crews :Dancing-Banana: .

Sir - I posed the question truly not knowing... if WW2-era armor can defeat modern ordnance, then was its abandonment due to cost, and not due to inefficacy?
Just where is the pointer in the current armor<--->anti-armor see-saw battle?

Would be interested to know if it has been tested against the likes of Javelin etc......... and something like a warthog maybe.......
I don't think there's anything a tank can really do against a Warthog unless we start equipping MBT's with SAMs. On the other hand, I doubt the IDF will be involved in an Armor Vs Armor battle against the USA any time soon.Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
