State Budget Gaps: How Does Your State Rank?

Rather interesting. Incredible to read that NV's deficit is equivalent to 42% of current spending.

Are there any planned measures to reduce this across the board?

(e.g. as some sort of treaty between federal and state governments, like in other countries)

All the states want the feds to bail them out. Part of the California budget is relying on this "unseen money" to balance the books. We have a "balanced budget amendment" in our state constitution so every budget must balance. The trick is how it is balanced. All I can say is if a private company balanced its book this way, the company officers would be jailed for fraud.

The feds cannot bail out anyone. If one state gets bailed out, everyone else will have their hands out for some free money.

So, basically the states have the feds sign for the credit they're taking out - after all the feds have a huge deficit too.
No wonder the Chinese own your economy ;)

No problem. We'll just spend our way to prosperity. Think about the pay roll tax and the income tax the federal government could collect if it hires another 1 million workers.

I haven't really been paying attention, but wasn't NJ going through cost-cutting under Christie?

And NY is definitely going under some cost-cutting. State Universities are definitely feeling the pinch with tuition and across the board increases.

In Ct we are experiencing modest tax increases, cuts in spending and some state employee givebacks. The real positive is Malloy is adopting general accounting practices going forward and the fixes are systremic not one time cost savings to pass the buck forward. I found it ironic when Christie said the doors of still much higher taxxed NJ were open after Malloy announced the tax increases Of course CA, NJ, CT. would be fine if they weren't the engines of the economy pumping tax dollars into poorer states. Looking at SC they are a real disaster not only do thet recieve massive amounts of other state resisents tax dollars they still cant finance the minimal goverment they have.

                    That map is misleading...

650 million of the 4 billion spent in Arkansas is via DOT funds to facilitate commerce between the East and West since the nations busiest interstate bisects the state. Of the remaining 3.4 billion, 1.6 is medicaid which the feds force Arkansas to partake in.

CT gets 500 million in DOT funds for far less roads and 3.18 billion for medicaid with a difference in population of less than a million.

Per capita some of those states get far more federal dollars in total amounts.

My state, Virginia, ranks 20th with a shortfall of $2B.

The good news is, it was $6B 2 years ago.

No farm subsidies in Arkansas. it's straight forward taxes paid vs federal spending recieved. Arkansas chooses to participate in Medicaid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal...venue_by_state
Arkansas paid half as much in total taxes than CT to the federal goverment and 6000.00 less per capita. Of course CT subsidizes your state. that's just the fact of the matter. I know it doesn't play to the right wing myth of blue states being burdens but that is a myth. Mind you I understand the reasons why for the most part but it doesn't change the fact of the matter a whit.

Well Rosie, that's your progressive tax rates at work. Your state has more high-income residents. The dollars they pay in as a ratio against benefits recieved are higher in comparison to a state that has a higher percentage of low income residents.

That's what your redistributive policies are intended to do- not sure why you are complaining.

I wasn't complaining just pointing out that the story of the self sufficent conservative red state base of the republican party is mostly a lie and without sudsidization from states like ct that pay 6k more per capita in income taxes than a state like Arkansas those states wouldnt have near the standard of living they enjoy. I find it ironic the places that benefit the most from our tax system believe they are the ones exporting their tax dollars to support all those lazy blue staters.
