    Imagery and propaganda

Had a great conversation today about the use of imagery in propaganda, with the following image serving as the source of conversation. I'm not sure if I would have picked up some of the subtleties in this print, so I'll leave it to others to point out some of the themes being presented in this print.

"So little pains do the vulgar take in the investigation of truth, accepting readily the first story that comes to hand." Thucydides 1.20.3

Well, Atleast they didnt frown upon the "lefties" even in those days.)

*Only kidding but I figured I would point that out.

*Lee always wore the suite of a gentleman politician. Never a Generals uniform in most pictures. With exception to his surrender at Appamattox.

*This "picture" must have been taken before the "last meeting". Stonewall Jackson is to Lee's immediate right.

*Two generals have their hands in their jackets like Napolean would pose.

*Another interesting point of the photo is its entitled "Lee and his Generals" when in fact Lee was a General himself. The title of the photo seems to give credence that he held Jefferson Davis's position as President of the Confederacy.

Lee is the tallest, is not wearing a uniform but rather a dress suit of the period, and is not armed. I'm not sure about the record on his height, but I do know that he often didn't wear a uniform, and so it's not an outright fabrication, but there definitely is a message being sent through the choice of the artist.

Shek, Perhaps who his more favored generals were? Or maybe (longshot) the line in the picture to Lee's lower right infront of Stonewall Jackson and the rest of generals to the right? I cant tell who the artist is without finding it on the net.

    Note:

The red tie's job is to draws attention to Obama.

The position of his hands advocates confidence.

The position of Michelle and Malia Ann suggests 'love and care' as in the traditional role of the first lady.

    Sasha's hand promotes trust.

Folks, this is a fine example of propaganda

    Grey Hair

Certainly can't miss R.E. Lee with his all white facial and head hair. Wise and dignified amidst his warrior-leaders. Only one other (fourth from Lee's left) and well-buried in the background.

Xinhui, humbly think that NO political entity has done a more beautiful job of artistry while projecting a proper spirit of elan and "correctness" than the CCP.

Here's one site devoted to such-

    Andy,

Oddly enough, my interest in such stems from an album by ENO, a British electronic art rock musician.

I was a freshman in college in early 1974 and taking a class on the CCP from Dr. Hung Mao-Tien who later became Taiwan's Foreign Minister. He often alluded to the operatic and flowery poetry behind much of the CCP's propaganda art.

This album came out at the same time as the class-really bearing nothing related to the CCP but with a topical overture to their propaganda work. Hated the album but REALLY dug the title...

The album is entitled-Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)) Here's the album cover-
