  • Emergency generator room...

On the starboard side just aft of the mess deck is a compartment not often mentioned in DD recitals.
The Diesel generator room located at A-305-1E caught my attention several months back when reading the account of Halsey battling typhoons in the Pacific and unable to refuel his DD's that already had short legs in the a big ocean.

One of the accounts mentioned the blending of diesel fuel with bunker oil to extend the running time between unreps.
I wonder what and where the diesel was used and then connected the dots.

      • DD-652-launched ....

A perfect PR photo of the bottle broken across the bow of the USS Ingersoll DD-652.
This Fletcher Class-DD named after ADM Royal Rodney Ingersoll a Civil War veteran.
His grandson Royal Rodney Ingersoll III, (KIA) Battle of Midway serving aboard the USS Hornet.

I hope the woman didn't get any of that on her ....????

        • Square bridge ....

This builders photo of the Ingersoll viewed from the Port quarter forward offers the simply graceful form of a Fletcher-DD sans guns.
The preinstalled gun version with 51& 52 mounts and 40 mm Bofors missing provides a clean view of the superstructure.

Long faded glory as the USS Ingersoll is moored to an anchor buoy off the California coast awaiting its journey to the bottom.
Note the 51 gun has been removed as well as the dual 3-inch guns and the radar arrays aloft the tripod mast.

                  • I got the first part. Definitely Venice in front of Saint Marks. But, the second part, clearly experts like DonBelt have that one nailed.

                        Interesting....

The experience gained from Ingersoll’s performance as Gun Ship Da Nang set the foundation for the Naval Gunfire Support Group. Ingersoll is believed to be the only destroyer to perform combat missions in the “Brown Waters” of South Vietnam (Da Nang Harbor and Saigon River).

The Department of Veterans Affairs published an Addendum Compensation & Pension Service Bulletin, Volume 1, Issue 7 on July 31, 2007. The Bulletin authorized “Herbicide Exposure Presumption Extended to USS Ingersoll Crewmembers”, as set forth below.

“The USS Ingersoll (DD 652) operated as a Navy destroyer gunship providing fire support for military ground operations along the Vietnam coast during 1965. In addition to coastal duty, the USS Ingersoll traveled up the Saigon River on October 24th and 25th of 1965 to fire on enemy bases. C&P Service has reviewed the ship’s deck logs, located at the National Archives and records Administration, and confirmed this service in the “inland waterways” of Vietnam. As a result, the presumption of herbicide exposure, as described in 38 CFR 3.307(a)(6)(i), should be extended to any crewmember who served aboard ship during October of 1965. This presumption is authorized by M21-1MR section IV, ii.2.C.10b. Regional offices should reevaluate any disability claim based on herbicide exposure from one of these veterans that has been denied.”

A total of twenty-four (24) combat missions were fired against 116 enemy targets during this deployment. This resulted in firing of over 60,000 rounds of 5” 38 ammunition. All four (4) gun barrels were replaced in early 1966, due to excessive wear and erosion of gun barrel rifling.

                        • USS LUCE on eternal patrol ...

USS Luce was sunk by Japanese Kamikaze Aircraft off Okinawa May 4 1945.
This photo has a date of May 1945 from Navsource.
I like this photo because it shows the DD underway with 40mm's covered.
A very clear B&W photo with the depth charge racks visible. (Photo credit Ed Zajkowski )

                          • USS Luce, with Measure 32 paint .....

[QUOTE=blidgepump;1020510]USS Luce was sunk by Japanese Kamikaze Aircraft off Okinawa May 4 1945.

"Off Okinawa, she was targeted by two Japanese special attack aircraft on 4 May 1945. She was able to down the first, but only when the aircraft had already closed in, thus the blast of the explosion still caused general power failures aboard the ship. Moments later, she was struck by the second special attack aircraft in the aft section on the port side, knocking out the port engine, jamming the rudder, and causing flooding. When the list became too significant, the commanding officer gave the order to abandon ship. She exploded as she sank. Of the 312 on board, 126 were killed in the attack and the sinking."

A mixture of old and new..... "a port bow view of the USS Lawes (DD-558), as she carries off a jack-stay transfer to an unidentified U.S. aircraft carrier. The photo is taken in the early 1950s, and the Lawes still carries a mixture of WW2 and post-WW2 equipment. Post-war modifications include an anti-submarine hedgehog mortar, Mark 25 Fire Control Radar, and SPS-10 surface search radar. Her #3 5”/38 gun mount has not been removed, but she still carries 40mm Bofors AA guns and is still equipped with SC-4 radar at the mast head."

Not to confuse this berth with the Captain's "Sea Cabin" while the ship was underway.
