  • Pakistan not to sign NPT

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has said that it will sign the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) only after it is recognised as a nuclear state.

Pakistan's assertion came in response to concerns voiced by Japan over nuclear proliferation.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, who left Pakistan on Sunday after a two-day visit, had urged the Pakistani leadership to sign the NPT.

Pakistani leaders told Koizumi that any positive change in Islamabad's stance on NPT would not be forthcoming before it was recognised as a nuclear weapon state.

The renewed demand by the Japanese prime minister for signing the NPT came ahead of a month-long international conference to review the treaty starting Monday at the UN headquarters in New York.

The NPT came into effect in 1970 with the aim of preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and promoting the peaceful use of atomic energy.

Under the treaty only Britain, China, France, Russia and the US are allowed to have nuclear arms with other signatory countries banned from possessing them.

Pakistan, India and Israel who are also nuclear states have so far refused to sign the treaty.

I have always wondered what gives the the 'other five' the right to posess it but keep it from the others!
    Should India and Pakistan comply?
Pakistan will never sign the treaty unless India and Israel do so.

Nothing, they cant force India, Pakistan or Israel to abandon their stockpile.

Why shud they?? do they depend on NPT for their livelihoods??

Pointless, Pakistan is one of the worst nuclear proliferator in the world. Signing NPT is not going to change that. so, Pakistan does not have a stated pčolicy, but just toe's along India and Israel. Weird thing to do by a sovreign nation.

Profileration at some level is a black page in our history, eventhough any involvement of GoP or Army is yet to be proven.

Well, I dont think the top bueracrats and military administration is that stupid to have their hands in wet in public. As they say, its very easy to mask the govt's role in these black market dealings.

Also just by saying AQ Khan was involved in a criminal activity with out Pakistani govt's knowledge is also plain BS. By declaring it as nuclear power, the onus is on the Pakistan Govt to curn proliferation from its soil.

So it's not needed to prove GoP or PA's involvement in proliferation, its their inaction that caused this catastrophy.

The political climate and course has changed dramatically in Pakistan under Mushes regime.
What ever the previous governments did or did not, Islamabad is very well aware of the risks of profileration.

Would Pakistan be getting any weapons from US and be involved in global profileration...?
            I think not!

Iran and Pakistan aren't really friendly countries. Relations between UAE govt and Pak govt. are also at an all time low ever since Gwadar neared its completion. Things appeared good when at Shk Zayed's funeral, Shk Mohammad (the man who had been incharge ever since Zayed started to remain sick) and Mushy were seen hanging around together all the time, but we've heard rumours that, and thats all they might be, that Shk Zayed remarked to Mushy that Pakistan's a debtor in a very derogatory type way and word has it, that very night Shk Mohammad got UAE's entire payment back. The businessmen of UAE are however Pakistan's leading investors in this 2004-2005 year.

There's no logic in why Pak would want to lose the only advantage we have over other Muslim nations. They're richer and have a massive conventional inventory of arms.

Iran is warming up towards India and has granted (military) access to it's port of Gwatar just accross Pak-Iran border.

Stupid idea that Pakistan would pass any nuke technology to such a neighbor.

Btw Pakistan has good relations with most of the muslim coutries in the ME, none of them is in favour of Iran going nuclear.

I also heard this nerws quoted by some one else here is that true?

Ok anyways when it comes to transfer of nuclear know how it doesnt always comes with govt knowldge as is the case with AQ khan,he could have given them some info.

NPT is just a tool of P5 to put pressure on the other countries and see that things happenas their wish and whimp. As similar to the veto they enjoy in UN.

Ind,pak, isr have withstood the pressure till now and should carry itself in that same way.
but the govt should show more maturity and speak less rheotoric.
What's the difference between people who pray in church and those who pray in casinos?
The ones in the casinos are serious.

Well what gives the permanent five the right to keep their nuclear arsenals and at the same time, sermonise other countries about signing up to the treaty?

                    That is blatant double speak.

The danger though, of states like Iran and North Korea persist. North Korea seems to be boasting of its nuclear bombs.

Actually, there are two things in this - the immediate threat of some countries going nuclear, and the principle that the global community as whole should be nuclear free.

Little surprise then, that the big five choose to focus on the former, while cleverly dodge the latter. Very smart, actually. ;)

The NPT is one of the most unfair treaties that exist in my opinon. Kudos to India, Pakistan and Israel for refusing to sign this. What makes the 5 permanent UN members get the right to keep the nukes and even consider advancing their development of them.
