  • US Navy and 1975 oil embargo

Yesterday, on the Hornet, was once again talking to a docent who spent a few years on the FDR. He was telling us a story of how the FDR was forced to stay in port, Athens, for 2 months due to the oil embargo. Naturally he said it was a great time as it was a good port to be in. This, as compared to the JFK which was confined to Rota Spain for 2 months and wasn't so great. We had a great number of oil burning carriers at the time so were any other carriers confined to port during this period and at which ports.

Re: US Navy and 1975 oil embargo

The oil embargo started on Yom Kippur of 1973 until early 1974. I do remember one US flagged ship had oil and it refused to refuel a destroyer and the Navy threatened to fire on it it did not change its position. The oil company relented and the ship refueled the destroyer. I remember the stink it made in the national news papers, was the oil company holding its allegiance to OPEC or to the USA?
