Z, have your forgotten the calculus? They can go balls out, provided they're willing to lose butt out. By the time they go balls out, their butt would have been burnt to the ground.

Who the hell cares? They make up less than 200,000 man force in open desert.

*IMO, This is exactly why Iran has gotten even this far. Because the respective nations have let her. She runs her mouth with enough threats so maybe this time we should hold her to them and see exactly what she really can do outside of all the mouth. I bet she cant do shit except be nothing but a bother to ME peace. Yep ,she may do damage but she wont be around to see the ending thats for sure. If she does go all out, then we should in kind without a second thought and definately without restriction.

As far as the "hidden imam" goes, IMO if they want conflict so bad, then why make them wait any longer for it and lets bring him fourth "smartly" and before then can produce a nuclear weapon, if we dont its like waiting for the other party to draw first, not in our interests. But before that happens that regime and its backers are toast FIRST AND FOREMOST and so are their aspirations.

Maybe when the dust settles Israel moves in to a much bigger place!:));)

It depends on who fires the first shot. If they pick a time when we don;t have a lot of carriers close by they have at least a week where we can't really stop them. This is why I advocate striking first where we control the start of the dance.

Because some of those nutjobs are now decision makers.... Its one thing for rank and file guardsmen to want WWIII to brign back the Mahdi, its quite another for generals and politicians to want it. A-jad belongs to this faction BTW. His faction has been in a silent civil war inside the guards for some time. If the radicals win....

          New Sanctions approved by P-5+1

Washington (CNN) -- The United States, Russia, China and other key nations have reached agreement on a "strong" Iran sanctions resolution, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tuesday.

Speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Clinton said the United States has been "working closely" with its international partners -- the so-called P5 plus 1 -- on a resolution to present to the United Nations Security Council.

She said they forged "a strong draft with the cooperation of Russia and China," the two countries that have been reluctant to impose strong sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program.

"We plan to circulate the draft resolution to the entire Security Council today," said Clinton, who made the remarks before she began testifying about START, the U.S.-Russian treaty on nuclear arms.

The P5 plus 1 comprises the five permanent member of the Security Council -- the United States, China, Russia, France, and Britain -- as well as Germany.

The group has been concerned that Iran intends to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has denied that claim, saying it wants to develop nuclear power for peaceful purposes.

Clinton noted an Iranian offer to send low-enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for highly enriched uranium but said it would not stop U.S. efforts to impose sanctions.

"We acknowledge the sincere efforts of both Turkey and Brazil to find a solution regarding Iran's standoff with the international community over its nuclear program," Clinton told Sen. John Kerry, D-Massachusetts, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, citing the two countries that brokered the deal.

But, she said, the P5 plus 1 "are proceeding to rally the international community on behalf of a strong sanctions resolution that will, in our view, send an unmistakable message about what is expected from Iran."

*I'd be more interested in seeing these sanctions instead of taking politicians words for it.;)

They could be the most honorable foe, hold closest to the LOAC and use limited force and the destruction we are going to visit on them is the same as if they were total ratters. They built up a capability that leaves us no choice and so they have nothing to lose by trying to wreck the global economy.

Agreed; since they have a slightly different view of world geopolitics than we do (BTW, that was a deliberate understatement), they probably look forward to getting pounded by the West, just so they can tell their Middle Eastern buddies how evil we are; don't forget, Saddam was able to spin GW1 and make it look like he actually defeated the bigger, badder Western armies with nothing more than faith and a lot of prayer. After GW1, his position in the Middle East was actually much stronger simply because he was able to convince most of the Muslim world that he had gone toe-to-toe with the US and won; I wouldn't put it past Ahmadinejad to do the same thing, if only to score some points with his people and the Islamic world in general.

One problem with that theory, Iran had to court Brazil and Turkey in order to make a deal. They are still going to get the stiffer sanctions as well since all members backed them. So you really cant say Iran has any real friends in the ME (perhaps Turkey and thats a maybe) that would want to see Iran start an arms race with their idealisms and racisims. That is the regime, not the Iranian people as a whole. Others would want to arm just in case others arm etc. I guess we shall see how effective these sanctions are over the next 6-8months for starters.

And as far as Saddam goes, he didnt win anything except his day in court and the losing end of a hangmans noose at the hands of his own people so it must not have won them over very effectively.
