Truly "back in the day" sh!t there, BD1. My battalion at Sill was a test-bed for TACFIRE but we didn't field it into the FA brigades before about 1979-80. Whole bunch of stuff showed up between 1980-85. Digital Message Devices, VHF encryption gear, Laser designators, TACFIRE and, yeah, AN/TPQ 36/37 radar.

Both videos were early/mid 70s with the TACFIRE video relying heavily on Vietnam era footage. Early Vietnam at that judging by the prominent unit shoulder patches for the 101st Airborne.

There IS a correlation between the aural violence of some bands and artillery. I will confess to that.;)

The sound of raining death. Thats a comment from the end of this vid. Now I know you older folks out there remember the days when massing fires meant something :) and wont find this vid in the least bit impressive. But the noise of thieir fellow batteries letting loose definitely motivated these Marines. Also pay attention to teh gatorade bottle. SHows how much of a "Little baby charge" MACS Zone 1.

              Raining Death

The best was (IMV), and still is, the DPICM night-shoot in Baghdad. There was some serious hell being dispensed on that mission and it would have been a real treat to be in an FDC hearing and seeing the particulars of that mission while monitoring the F.O. traffic.

Thought I'd chime in with the local boys...

Artillery were and are still one of the only combat units that have womenfolk in their ranks (Caracal and Anti Air also have members of the fairer sex). But that's cause most of them are a bunch of pu$sies, anyway ;)

It's nice and all, don't get me wrong, but if you ask me, Arty is still nothing but wannabe tankies who couldn't get in to do the real thing, so they put a bigger tube on their ride to mask their inferiority complex...

Sure.:)) Maybe in the IDF it works that way...

120s looked like they were firing somewhere in Konar or Nuristan.

Pffft, you haven't come up against a real minefield. And one with nasty tricks up the ying-yang, then you'll be begging for gunners and engineers.

To be completely honest, if you're not in either Golani or the Paratroopers, you don't count. Pilots are always the best, but they're so much better than everyone else, and never around anyway, to actually be a part of the pecking order.

Tankies were the big thing after 1973 and stories like Avigdor Kahalani and Oz 77, holding off massive Syrian forces in the Valley of Tears and Tzvika Force, at times just one tank taking on dozens of Syrians and beating them back. Down in the Sinai you had Arik Sharon (big mouth, big ego and big PR machine) and Bren Adan beating the shite out of the Egyptians, crossing the canal, surrounding the Egyptian 3rd Army and nearly doing the same to the 2nd Army. If you were in tanks, you were the shiznit.

Then in the late 80's and the Intifada, infantry started becoming the "in" thing. The best infantry brigade keeps shifting from Golani to Givati to Paratroopers. Kfir (Designated Infantry. Each battalion had one of 6 different Palestinian cities, and that was their permanent AO) took it for a brief while during the second Intifada, and now it hovers between Golani and Paratroopers. For some reason the Nahal brigade never gets top honors.

Due to my medical profile (and cause I hid a slightly bum leg from the docs which prevented it from dropping even further) I wasn't eligible for infantry (I was really bummed at that when I found out what my options were. I was really set on infantry at first). My options (for a combat unit) were Tanks, Arty, AAA or the Home Front Command's SAR Battalion. I decided to go to Tanks, since it seemed to be the most combat oriented unit. I quickly fell in love with the Behemoths, and since we were fairly low on the food chain (but still higher than Arty) we boosted ourselves by making fun of infantry, and the main fact that they walk while I drive from place to place, and have more firepower and armor than they do.

It's a bit screwed up, I know, but esprit de corps and friendly rivalry are good things, no? ;)
