"But nothing beats A-gunning on this sweet old lady".

That was then and this is now. It is what it is.

Love to see more of your photos though. You unquestionably have put some of the last rounds downrange for the oldest system in the American artillery. Probably a few other countries out there still shooting it but we're done. With that passes into history a cannon like no other.

      • What did we see at 2:09 ? I thought I noticed an orange flash on that round as the breach opened which I didn't see on the others, but don't understand the reason or significance.

Notice the soil around the gun is muddy?

My guess is that a bit of propellant was wet and didn't completely burn on the previous projo. Some small residue smoldering in a near-vacumn (between the propellant burn and a round exiting the tube there's not much oxygen inside a tube with the breech closed). Powder residue re-ignited when the breech re-opened and oxygen hit it.

Be curious how Gun Grape or Arty Engineer see it.

          • Propellant was either Damp, Old or Both.

As S-2 pointed out that flash was an "Ignition of unburnt propellant residue". See it more and more with these ancient bag charges still being used for training purposes.

            • I don't know why I didn't ask this question this summer....the photos of the 82d ABN gunners....are light arty forces deployed to A'stan falling in on M777s instead of the authroized M119s per MTOE? Or is it a matter of a mixed battalion...couple batteries 105mm with 1 battery 155mm?

              I hadn't caught that.

Offhand it depends on battalion. 3-321 FA and supposedly 1-321 FA have the M777A2 (and previously M198), 2-321 FA kept the M119 (though there were supposedly plans to move them to M198 or M777).

                  • Kato,

If they were 82d Airborne gunners then they would be from a battalion of the 319th FA which are M119 battalions by MTOE in each BCT. 321 FA battalions are a part of the 18th Fires Brigade which is not part of 82d Airborne and are equipped with M777.

So my question remains....did ARCENT or someone else give the 82 gunners M777 ILO their authorized M119s.

                    • Albany and Kato

The whole artillery world is in a bit of a state of flux. But Kato is correct regarding the majority of my pics being from 1st and 3rd Battalion 321st FA. Which is part of 18th Fires Brigade at Ft Bragg along with 3rd Battalion 27th FA (The HIMARS Battalion). Early last year 18th Fires Brigade came back under 82nd Airborne Division hence the AA patch on the guys on the guns. Prior to that they were under XVIII Airborne Corps and wore the "Dragon Head Patch"

and the 18th Fires Brigade Patch (The Flying Dildo).

Now they wear the Brigade patch and the 82nd "Alcoholics Anonymous" patch.

That being said there are MANY units such as 2nd of the 321st or 4th of the 319th as examples equipped with M119 howitzers who are falling in on M777A2 howitzers downrange. We go out to these units prior to their deployment and provide them the full new equipment training package as if they were actually getting fielded.

And plans are afoot to give the IBCT's a 155mm indegenous capability by way of a battery of M777A2's. This has really picked up pace since the cancellation of the NLOS LS "AKA Rocket in a Box" WHich was going to be the IBCTs means of providing "Precisioin FIres". Now the only option for them is M777A2's with Excalibur and the soon to hit service Precision Guidance Kit Fuze.

Hope this in some way clarifies things.

                      Regards

                      • Got it....its more a TPE item than an MTOE for now with the possibility of a mixed battalion in the future. They get spun up during the MRE phase. So the 319th FA within the ABCT are still organized as M119 battalions but may pick up M777s as TPE.

Have all fires brigades moved under their affiliated divisions? I remember when the 18th Fires patch looked like this

                        Did they drop the tab?

My day job is in a PM office and I am in charge of fielding a new system...hence why I try to keep up on force structure, etc.

And Kato, I just reread my post and realize I sounded a little too strident...didn't mean it that way!

"Hope this in some way clarifies things..."

Clarifies that after nine years of playing with brigade combat teams as the optimal near-future manuever mix we still haven't a handle on supporting fires responsive across the full spectrum of conflict possible on a low/mid-intensity battlefield.

Also suggests that we're way short of infantry and, therefore, short of artillery. Last I checked the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) had four BCTs, eight infantry and four reconnaissance battalions, four artillery battalions and two full aviation brigades. Imagine if that entire division squatted down on the Arghandab.

The silence (sans the wop-wop of choppers) would be deafening.

Instead, we've got cannoneers pulling a grunt mission. I'm all for cross-training and artillery defending their own positions (and even the immediate surrounding A.O.) but this has gone too far.

We need to get the fcuk home, clean our gear and unscrew ourselves.

The "Tab" or lack thereof is a very touchy subject at Ft Bragg right now lol!!!!!. As of this moment in time only 1st Battalion 321st AFAR wear the AIrborne "Tab" as they are technically the only "Airborne Battalion" within the Brigade. Even though 3rd Battalion actiually also have the capabiliity simply because they seem to get all their 13 Bravos Jump School slots without too much difficulty. The idea of making the 3rd Battalion guys and the Himars Battalion go back to wearing the Black Beret has also been raised however that could just be the "Joe Hotline" at its finest!!!!

Regarding Structure of the FIres Brigades. Im not entirely sure, I think 17th Fires Brigade is still under I Corps and not 2nd ID.

Couldnt agree more, heck 5th Battalion 3rd FA, a HIMARS battalion have spent the last year in afghanistan as "Route Clearance Patrols" supporting the Engineer Battalions all across Afghanistan. WTF is that all about!!!!

I could go on a real rant right here about how the US Army is teetering on the brink of being institutionally "Broken" from a maintenace and logistics/supply perspective as the folks who should be doing these tasks and be proficient at them have spent the last several years being grunts or doing other non standard missions, but I will restrain myself.....oops I think that might just have been a little mini rant!!
