Pffft, you haven't come up against a real minefield. And one with nasty tricks up the ying-yang, then you'll be begging for gunners and engineers.

Hey, I never said one word against the Engineers. I love them! Hell, Engineers have got one of the worst jobs out there. We had an Engineer battalion attached to our brigade, and we did many an exercise with them. Whenever they were around we would invite them to chow with us.

Plus, Engineers have really got massive brass cojones hanging down there. According to studies I've seen, in the next large scale war we have, the average life span of an Engineer officer once we start crossing the Border Obstacles is between 14 and 17 seconds. That, and a little SOP where the CO and his team run through the AT minefield to get to the other side and the shelter of the next berm to keep running the minesweeping operations. No bull$hit

Muzzle brake? What muzzle break? On our tanks (in my time) they were called Blast Deflectors to prevent kicking up too much dust obscuring the hit to the gunner.

At least for tank guns and direct fire guns. Why they put it on a high angled artillery piece I don't know. From the picture, if it was a muzzle break, the side blast would be angled a bit downwards. But I see it coming straight out port and starboard as a Blast Deflector would.

Oh well, maybe these new weapons gizmos do things differently nowadays than half a century ago.

But still a TERRIFIC photo. Amost artistic in a way.

The Double Baffel "Muzzle Brake" on the triple 7 counteracts about 17% of teh recoilng forces. We cant make it any more efficient as to do so it would angle much more "bad stuff" back towards the exposed crew. The superefficient muzzlebrake developed for teh NLOS C counteracted almost 45% of the recoil forces......but teh first time it ws fired it blew out all teh lights on teh vehicle chassis along with the vision blocks on the drivers compartment!!!!! Would not have been fun to be standing beside that howitzer when it fired!!!!

I was just going to say I think its the same FOB. Almost all the cool pics have came from the 2 or 3 fobs throughout the Korengal. They have done the most shooting and as such have generated the most cool pics.

In retrospect, I'm not so sure. Not saying it isn't but your photo shows a more built-up berm. Could be later. Last "P" for TLASBAPP is position improvement. Always...

I think this one is even more interesting, thank you That projectile storage area is very intersting, and this one really gives a nice technical view of the weapon. Is that a typical emplacement with the cylindrical strutures in the wall? Is the correct term blast deflector or a muzzle break?

It is a very well composed photo, I would consider them both works of art.

Well, you'll note my comment to A.E. about "position improvement". Supposedly, it's a constant until you displace. That said, you'll note the berm height difference between the two photos. There are some other modest differences. Further, it's difficult to tell if we're looking at the same gun position or even FOB.

We call them muzzle BRAKES.

Sorry, it took me a while get to and then make my way through this thread (great pictures by the way) but as an ex-gunner I just have to say:

Firstly, this just sounds like "tube" envy to me.

Secondly arty usualy starts the fight, often finishes it and if any poor barstard every tried to touch our "tubes" without asking our permission they were going to get get one hell of a fight and the wrong end of a bayonet.,,, try doing that as a tankie.. oh I forgot you guys can just hit "reverse" :)

Talking about artillery.. here's some of the after action reporting of the USS New Jersey's shore bombardment in 1968/69..




Staff Sergeant Robert Gauthier summed up the marine's feelings for NEW JERSEY in an interview over the ship's TV system: "You are doing more to improve the morale of the men on the beach than anything else in the war. Every time we go on patrol, someone says, 'The big one is out there. Nobody better mess with us or she'll get them.' You are saving lives out here.. American lives. And we thank you."

He then told how he had been leading a platoon in the area where NEW JERSEY was firing in support of the Third Marine Division. "We were ordered to pull back about 200 yards so that somebody, we didn't know who at the time, could start shooting at some Communist bunkers and emplacements that had been giving us a lot of trouble. When we finally moved back about 500 yards, we heard what at first sounded like a subway train moving through a tunnel--a big rushing noise--then BANG! Later on when we went back into the area, there was nothing.. just nothing. It was like something had come along with a big eraser and wiped everything clean. And they were big, heavily fortified bunkers, targets our own artillery couldn't touch."






On Tuesday, the 29th, NEW JERSEY destroyed 30 structures, three underground bunkers and 350 meters of trench line. During the afternoon the aerial observer located an enemy artillery position on a hilltop about four miles southwest of Cap Lay. The site was active and had recently been harassing allied ground troops in northern I Corps. After NEW JERSEY laid in four 16-inch rounds, the spotter radioed back "excellent coverage.. keep them coming". Two rounds later the radio crackled once again. "You've just lowered the mountain by 20 feet. Artillery site destroyed."


NEW JERSEY moved to the DMZ on Sunday, the 29th, where she would operate into the New Year. In one mission into the southern half of the Zone that afternoon, the battleship destroyed eight 2,500 square foot bunkers and demolished six structures. The spotter called in the fire when it was discovered the Communists had violated the buffer zone and built fortifications. One large secondary explosion was reported by the spotter as he shifted targets. : "Don't ever let anyone tell you you can’t put two bullets in the same hole", he said. "You can't miss. You must have a pair of magic tubes."
