    • So Arty, how's the NIE run up going?

I was there during that last dust storm but had to tough it out between main post & Biggs!

I'll be back 20-25 June and staying at the Fortress Holiday Inn Express.

But for our return trips July through October we have already arranged rooms next door at the brand new Staybridge Suites!!!

The guys at 4-27 FA are ready. They were hoping to have some actual Excaliburs to shoot during this summers event but alas I dont think thats going to happen. The other possibility was to get some of the new Precision Guidance Kit Fuzes for use but that program seems to be sliding to teh right somewhat (Not a technical issue but a legal challenge to the last downselect I believe). I have a horrible feeling they are not actually going to do much shooting, but to be honest thats not the purpose of the Evaluation.

There sure are a lot of moving pieces to the NIE!!!! Close to 4000 soldiers a involved operating in in an 8000 square kilometer chunk of desert.

Not sure when Im heading back down that way, waiting on a definitive schedule from teh Battalion. Will PM or email you when I know, thanks for the heads up on your hotels.

        • This is just stupid!!!

You may recollect I have mentioned that the M777 is restricted from firing the 2 top charges below a Certain elevation. This video shows why. Especially when the section didnt even bother to dig the spades in at all!!!

This video made me pretty damn mad. They were so lucky no one got hurt.

"...Especially when the section didnt even bother to dig the spades in at all...!!!"

Guess they intended to shoot in the spades.

"...This video made me pretty damn mad. They were so lucky no one got hurt..."

Safety T should have prevented it. FDC should never have computed it. We're not getting the whole story here. That still doesn't diminish culpability for failing to mitigate the anticipated recoil at the gun.

I presume you know the unit. I'd be interested in the follow-up. Somebody should be answering pointed questions on that one.

I admit the video does showcase the unique geometry of the trails which makes them dig as the weapon displaces to the rear.

I know the unit very well, and I really though they were beyond doing something like this. They are experienced users of the M777 and should have shown the system more respect and if they really had to shoot this Charge/QE then at least use a ling lanyard and keep everone away from the weapon on the first round.

The reason this unit gave as to why they were doing this was to colect MV data, due to restricted airspace the only way they could hit the impact zone with the 4 Hotel (M232A1 Zone 4) was this QE.

I have heard that excuse before and it shows a lack of coordination down range that airspace cant be cleared to allow the units to calibrate new lots of propellant without resorting to this.

Something else which concerns me is on the recieving end. Any indirect fires performed below a quadrent of 270 mils has a significant probability of Skipping due to the shallow angle of fall. Somewhere I have a probability of skip table for projectile/charge/QE and without even looking at it I know the probability here is in excess of 50%. So basically we are just scattering unexploded 155 rounds around the afghan countryside. You would not believe (well you S-2 probably can) how far 155 rounds can skip when you really dont want them to.

Heck just last weekend I was at Ft Pickett with the Marine Reservists and they had an M825A1 (WP Cannister) skip 3000m outside of the Impact area and that was using a 2 Lima (M231 Zone 2 - roughly equivelent to Zone 5 on the old M3 Green Bag charge system). So you can imagine how far a round fired with a 4 Hotel (roughly equivelent to the M119 Red Bag) could skip.

Ummm...it's why a direct fire range has such a huge buffer zone on the far end of the safety box.

                  Skip (pun intended) happens.;)

                  • You guys can appreciate, then, the huge range fans for 120mm & 25mm direct fire ranges....a lot of the same reasons.

At FT Stewart in the late 1980s had mny company doing dismounted training in the buffer area along the NE side of the post impact area. thats when I understood why they closed off so much of the training area on the east side when the M1s & M2s were firing fromt eh west side. We could see scarring on the trees from overshoots and skips...and we were 18 kms from the ranges.

                    Same phenomenom.

                    • How to correctly use Charge 4 Hotel (M232A1 Zone 4)

Here we have the sister battery to those shown previously demonstrating teh correct way to utilise those high zone charges.

Note the spades not dug past the minimum engagement of 3 inches here either, but when shooting high angle it doesnt matter.

After the first round which rocks the whole weapon a bit it is totally stable on all subsequent rounds.

The purpose of this weeks training was in suport of an infantry unit getting ready to deploy. What Ft Bragg call a "Walk and Shoot" Basically the Infantry unit were out walking through certain scenarios and using thier indirect fire suport assets as required.

The Marines from 2nd ANGLICO were over working with them also.

Here we have the results on the receiving end:

                            • Here we have some pics of the USMC down in the south of Afghanistan.

Quite a bit different than the fixed well established FOB's in the North East

Officer of Engineers will like this one :)

Even at Log Point the guns are laid and Fire Cap established.
