I was at Yuma Proving Ground when that video was taken. Saw quite a bit of the Weisel 120 Mortar Carrier in action. A truelly great little vehicle. I am a huge fan. And damn but it is fast!!!!

        • Thanks. Good footage. Interesting on the last video the Chief Of Firing Btry indicated that section would be shooting twenty rounds in direct fire IIRC. Didn't see a whole lot of concern down in the gun section so I presume they had friendly troops in contact on the immediate hillside to their front or, conversely, had simply observed movement in a free-fire area. I'd have expected a different posture if they were taking incoming.

We had a couple Wiesel 1 AFVs at the base i was stationed at, used for training by the maintenance guys (they were leftovers from when the 1st Airborne Division had their HQ there up till eight years earlier*). Whenever the gearheads were finished taking them apart and putting them back together they took little joy rides around the base. So when we were doing our maintenance stuff, we usually had our equipment laid out on the tarmac in front of the halls. Seen it more than once that they wizzed around the corner with a Wiesel, speed up, then see the pump blocking their path and immediately hit the brakes.

And when that thing hits the brakes from 50 mp/h the whole vehicle tilts up, with the back of the tracks raising up to two feet off the ground.

Suspect that won't be the case with the Wiesel 2 though. It weighs quite a bit more, and in particular the mortar version looks like the point of gravity is quite a bit farther back.

            ---
*- The maintenance guys also had a single Marder IFV (not running), a pair of Luchs scout AFV (one of them refit with a tied-down functional 84mm Carl Gustav in a mock turret in place of the original turret) and a completely rusted artillery observation tank without tracks. No idea where they got those from.

That hillside and in fact most of those surounding the FOB's in that area are designated "Free Fire" areas, all locals know this and its even sign posted. So you got it on the money. They are shooting as a result of observed movement.

              • KMW ad piece for the PzH 2000:

A bit corny, but it shows off the automatic loader (in action) quite nicely. Damn thing is ramming faster than you'd believe. And some scenes, where they put the camera behind and below the breech while it's firing are a bit - yikes. Also has a couple secs on the PzH at Yuma too ;)

                And for more smoke:

and here's the impact from that video...

I was based at Yuma Proving Ground from 2001 through to 2004 and saw quite a bit of the PzH 200 in action aswell. As with teh Wesiel, I really admire that piece of equipment. It really should have been put into service in teh US. It met all teh requirements for the Crusader system to at least teh 80% level straight of the shelf. A lot of folks in teh US Field Artilery comunity really really wanted it, however it fell victim to teh "Not Invented Here" syndrome along with a VERY powerful United Defense Lobby. Oh well 2 cancelled Self Propelled Systems later (Crusader and NLOS-C and the US is back to further upgrading M109's

                  • Lovely. Nothing quite like a battalion 5 to go with your cup of coffee and cig. I figure there were approx. 120 rounds downrange.

                      • I remember a video was posted of a gun crew loosing off 5 rounds in 25 seconds or something like that. I looked for it, but couldn't find it. Arty, S-2, do you know which video I'm talking about?

Heres why Arty is your 24/7 All weather friend!!! Good luck getting Air Support in a mess like this. We were on a tight timeline so just kept on training the soldiers. Well, I say "We" but my maintenance training was over so I got to just chill in the vehicle providing 'Maintenance Support" as required ;)
