The gun carriage takes up virtually all the top surface area. That said, efficient shooting would still require that the gunner (panoramic telescope), asst. gunner (quadrant elevation) and either chief of section or #1 man be in close proximity to the lay, elevation, and firing mechanisms and 2.) the ammunition is heavy. While rate of fire is slow, consistent shooting would be fairly labor-intensive WRT preparation of charges, projos and fuzes. Further, those fuzes, propellant charges and projos must be off-loaded from the ammo carrier and either stored or immediately prepped before being carried to the gun.
Normally 4 people on the gun Gunner/A-Gunner, #1 and Section chief. Section Chief operating the loader/rammer behind the Gunner.

Some units insisted that the section chief only observe but the deck is so small that 5 people just trip over each other.

A 175mm projo weighs 145lbs. A 203mm projo weighs 200lbs. Those are two man jobs just to get the round up to the loading tray for ramming. Chief of section plus those men on the weapon and two loading the tray is six men. IIRC there a auto ramming mechanism but timing may be an issue. If so, the round doesn't fully seat tight around the rotating band. If so, the danger of blow-by is increased. Likely, therefore that two more men are manning a ramming staff. Now eight. That leaves five to prep ammo, handle RTO duties, dispose unused propellant and dunnage and keep the ROMF (Record Of Missions Fired) form. Voila! Thirteen. Toss in sustained firing ops (such as Yom Kippur) and you've other issues like maintenence and fatigue.
    Pretty good S-2

Min manning without getting someone hurt.

    4 on the gun,

1 on the hooks and writing the ROF

    4 running ammo.

    2 running powder

So 11, without local suck, advance party man or any of the other things that come up in a firing battery.

Stayed at a Holiday Inn last night. Screwed up that the RTO keeps the ROMF (DA Form 4513).

ROF (DA Form 4504) is kept by the FDC.

          • Gunny, you might enjoy this lil' quiz-

            Maintain DA Form 2408-4 Examination

Thank God I didn't have to take that. Actually, I probably did. Likely one of the classes I failed at Supply and Logistics Branch in Summerall Hall. Almost got assigned there. I laughed at them and said they'd best check my grades before doing so. Next thing I knew I was in Firing Battery Branch, Cannon Division, Weapons Dept. USAFACSFS. Best thing that happened to me in the army.

                    • Why cancelled? What's the benefit to piggy-backing the weapon vs. towing? How did the system orient (lay) prior to firing? Advance party man would mark the initial azimuth of fire with engineer tape to guide the vehicle/gun into position. I didn't see that here. Why no TLASBAPP or elements thereof performed-lay, aiming points, site-to-crest, boresight in particular?

Cancelled a few years back in one of the never ending UK Defense Budget Cuts.

The piggybacking concept was to allow prime mover and howitzer to drive on to and off a C130. Also to reduce lane length when embarked on the UK's Amphibs.

Once in theater the system would revert to standard towing configuration for all tactical moves.

UK M777's were to be equipped with the LINAPS (Laser Inertial Navigation and Pointing System) so the gun is up and navigating and the Detachment Commanders Display (DCD) is mounted in the cab of the vehicle during movement providing Navigation info and when at a Firing point giving steer to commands to pull in onto the Azimuth of Fire. Thats why no Aiming Circle set up etc. Soon as weapon on the deck and out of travellocks the Detachment Commander transmit piece status back to FDC containg Piece Location etc and he is ready to receive Firemeissions then and there. Traverse Limits, Site to Crest, max El etc would then be determined however as this was a "Marketing Vid" these aspects were not included.

                        Regards

                        • What really interests me is why this Vid for a system cancelled almost 2 years ago would be thrown up on BAE Systems PLC's Youtube Channel 2 days ago!!!! Probaly a prospective customer has expressed interest.

                          • I assume the Detachment Commander's Display is cable-linked to the Laser Inertial Navigation and Pointing System for real-time transfer enroute of initial azimuth of lay? GPS installed on gun for gun position data or just map-spot?

Yep, cabled as of right now but Selex have a wireless option using 802.11 (something or other) wirless protocols.

The Inertial Gyro on the LINAPS has a GPS circuit and antenna integral to it so they work together to provide real time continuously updating position and heading data for the system.

The Digital System on US Howitzers does axactly the same thing just uses different "Green boxes" bolted on to achieve the same result.

LINAPS data sheet. This is also the system selected by the Canadian Forces and India.
