I'm not a fan of the GOP either, they're too religiously motivated, and their pro-Israel stance has got me on the defensive, but i also don't like this taxing fetish the Democrats have, and the programs that reward laziness and punish people who really are trying. Because of the shitty economy, I lost a pretty decent job, and had to go on food stamps for the first time in my life. When I started back school, my case manager informed me that I need to find a job to keep my stamps, although there is hardly any work here to begin with. So here I was, going to school, trying to get my life together, only to be told that i was going to be punished because I lost my job, while these lazy-ass druggies get free health care and food stamps and government checks and comfy houses courtesy of Mr Joe Q. Taxpayer. Hell i have to live in an apartment for now because the job I have doesn't pay enough to live off of, I'm single so I don't get as many grants as parents do, so I'm paying part of my tuition myself, and now, that I've fallen on hard times, I'm going to get punished because I've put more time into school than work? A college education and part-time job isn't good enough, but sitting on your ass is? What kind of Twilight Zone throwback is this!!

I could bitch for about 4 more hours and 50 more pages, but I'll save your eyes.

Bottom line is, things suck the way they are, and I'm suffering from financial terrorism. Bills Bills Bills, and not enough money to pay em, yet some families in the apartment complex behind mine sit on their lazy asses, do drugs, and act like big children. And guess who gets the good life! Not me! No, I'm stuck paying for these clowns, plus an operation I'll have in March, and all the while sucking up to a social worker just to keep stamps that I paid for in the first place.

I paid taxes for a long time. The least they could do is let me have some of that back to put food on my table.
Well out of all that i can only see one thing that I probably disagree on, though it would warrant further discussion. But as Dennis Miller would say, "I like the cut of your jib!" Sounds like you have the basics of freedom and the responsibility that comes with it down pat.

"So in other words my name had you against me from the start. Kinda prejudicial?"

Indeed. As is the name "intifada", a.k.a. uprising.

"Like I said in my introductory post it's not jst my boardname it's my REAL NAME. My mom and dad added it after the first uprising in 1987."

That which is added can be dropped. It has nothing to do with your blood lineage. You've had plenty of time to reconsider and have chosen to wear such and, evidently, with pride. I find it an odious celebration. Nom de guerre or cause celebre, I know nor care not but I with-held my opinion until you expressed yours.

"I don't want to see me or my children being singled out needlessly..."

Then I shall pray you don't pass on your dubious suffix.

"...when there are real criminals out there committing real crimes."

Then be the first to raise your middle finger to the east from which those evil criminals come and set the correct example instead of casting defiance and aspersions at those who've provided your parents and you with succor and sanctuary.

I've my own unexpressed suspicions about why your parents moved here and I've my own unexpressed suspicions of their opinions about my country before they moved here...

...but here you are. Respect those that are trying to assure your and my safety lest I reasonably assume you received this education as a child-

"...I was in Detroit on Christmas Day spending time with my best friend. We would have been crushed to death."

As dubious as many of your other assertions to date.

Renounce your politically-laced suffix. By itself it's an affront to good sense and any notion of prudence that shall rightfully garner for you and unfairly garner for your children more scrutiny than you or they can imagine. If not, I'll pray they do so when of age to assume responsibility for themselves.

        I do.

...and taking the freedom card in hand and playing it, I must regretfully tell S-2 that I will not remove my name because it was bestowed upon me by my parents, whom have passed in 1988 from a car crash. I love them, and I respect their decisions, no matter how controversial. I am not going to change something about me that I have possessed for over 20 years to please some people, they should look at me personally, and what I have to offer instead of judging me by my race and ethnic background, as well as my name.

Then I shall pray you don't pass on your dubious suffix.
My children will not inherit it. It's not my last name, it's my middle. Zainab Intifadah. My last name is al-Ashkar. Why would that name be bad to have?

        "intifada", a.k.a. uprising
"Uprising" personifies me. I am the kind of person who can get a room full of people energized and motivated. That could really help now, given the situation in this country. Things are not going well, people are losing their houses and jobs, people are hurting here. If we had enough people to stand up and say "Enough is enough!" it could change.

In other words, my name fits me. Yes, it's political. I am political.

I've my own unexpressed suspicions about why your parents moved here and I've my own unexpressed suspicions of their opinions about my country before they moved here...
You do not know my parents. Do not speak badly of the dead. They were wonderful people.

I'm very sorry for your racist beliefs, S-2. But I will not cave from pressure just because my ethnic and political background make you a bit uncomfortable. You sound like my neighbor's son who told me "A real American thinks like this...". I did not like that comment. I do not like someone coming to me and telling me what they think a real American is. Technically, the real Americans were the indigenous tribes that lived here before the colonists came. I think if you love this country, contribute to the economy, and love justice and freedom, you're an American. I'm both Palestinian and American. I keep my old homeland in my heart and I do what I can to help my new homeland. I think that is what matters. I'm sorry if you disagree. We all can't be White Protestant Christians named Joe Smith. I don't want to be. I want to be a Palestinian-American Atheist named Zainab Intifadah al-Ashkar. It makes me unique.

You've had plenty of time to reconsider and have chosen to wear such and, evidently, with pride. I find it an odious celebration. Nom de guerre or cause celebre, I know nor care not but I with-held my opinion until you expressed yours
I'm sorry if you can't understand my pride. It's not a war name and I don't do it to piss people off. I'm just proud to be who I am. I'm me and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Then be the first to raise your middle finger to the east from which those evil criminals come and set the correct example instead of casting defiance and aspersions at those who've provided your parents and you with succor and sanctuary.
I raise my finger to ANY INJUSTICE committed by any country, including those religious fools. I do get harder on America, but not for the reason you think. I just expect more from this country because we know better!

....but here you are. Respect those that are trying to assure your and my safety lest I reasonably assume you received this education as a child-

The video was an insult. A flat out insult. I cannot believe you would post something like this as a response to me. That really was below the belt. I didn't do anything like that to anyone here.

Please respectfully keep your distance until you can overcome the prejudice. I deal enough with that on a daily basis. I come here to escape it, not get more of it. I respectfully withdraw my contact with you. I don't hate you, I just don't need the extra stress. You're welcome to respond, but this is my last response to you.

"I'm very sorry for your racist beliefs, S-2."

Tread carefully in your views. Nothing I've uttered is racist by any interpretation and your willful dissemblance is the refuge of those whom too commonly resort to such.

No sympathy here and my views of your parents politics has nothing to do with their passing. Your "ethic" has no role in my views. Your misguided sense of politics-everything.

Use your ignore button if you won't engage and don't care for my comments but I'll write as I see fit on your skewed perspectives.

          • intifada,

"Uprising" personifies me. I am the kind of person who can get a room full of people energized and motivated. That could really help now, given the situation in this country. Things are not going well, people are losing their houses and jobs, people are hurting here. If we had enough people to stand up and say "Enough is enough!" it could change.

In other words, my name fits me. Yes, it's political. I am political.
unfortunately, the word has undeniable political connotations, one that may remove it from other definitions. same with the word jihad, for instance. or the swastika, a symbol perverted from its original meaning.

but until the day comes when we see, very obviously, a greater muslim outcry to embody these better definitions of intifada and jihad-- for others, the more negative connotations will continue to persist.

thus, continuing to hold the name means you defy what other people think of the word. you're proud of the name. that's fine, but why are you then surprised when others question the name, and question what it means to you?

I think if you love this country, contribute to the economy, and love justice and freedom, you're an American. I'm both Palestinian and American. I keep my old homeland in my heart and I do what I can to help my new homeland. I think that is what matters
that is a start-- but only part of it.

a favorite author of mine put it best:

You owe your country everything, including your life; this obligation
supercedes all others when they conflict, including personal happiness or
safety, family, religion and ethnicity. And if you put any other call ahead of
loyalty to your country, you're simply a bad and disloyal citizen, end of
            story.

You country owes you very little. And your obligations to it are not
dependent on anything it does for you. The duty is absolute and unconditional,
            it's not a bargain or a set of quid-pro-quos.

And yes, if that means killing your cousin, or your brother or sister, or
carpet-bombing the city your ancestors came from, you do it. If you're
            actually an American, that is...

So perish all enemies of the Republic, foreign or domestic.
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov
