zraver's mention of Brittain's Testament of Youth reminds me about a good book written by another volunteer WWI nurse, Florence Farmborough, Nurse at the Russian Front.
Farmborough was also a photographer and reporter. Brief bio here:

Unlike Vera Brittain, Florence Farmborough was no pacifist. She became an ardent "White" during the Russian Revolution, and later on was a vocal supporter of Franco's Nationalists in Spain.
