India to acquire 400 more tanks from Russia: Report
    MOSCOW, APR 7 (PTI)
India is expected to buy 400 more T-90S main battle tanks (MBT) from Russia under a deal likely to be signed soon, a media report said here today.

"In June, the state-run Uralvagonzavod enterprise will obtain a major T-90S production contract and India would receive upto 400 MBTs worth USD 900 million to USD 1 billion," financial daily 'Vedomosti' said.

Although Russia's arms exporting agency Rosoboronexport declined to comment, a source close to the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation said that Indo-Russian talks on supplying 400 T-90S tanks have made "considerable headway and the contract was likely to be signed soon".

In February 2001, India had signed a USD 700 million deal with Russia for the purchase of 310 T-90S MBTs, of which Uralvagonzavod had delivered 124 tanks, while remaining 186 were assembled at Avadi Heavy Vehicles Factory near Chennai from the kits supplied by the Russian defence company.

The transfer of technology contract was completed last year.

Deputy Director of the Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, Konstantin Makiyenko told the daily that India wants to acquire another 400 T-90S tanks "to help restore balance of forces", after Pakistan, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia launched joint production of Al-Khalid MBT-2000 tanks.

Unlike standard Russian versions, the custom-made T-90S that India has been buying feature French-made equipment, including thermal imaging systems.

Well this is good news, tyhis can be used to retire the old vijayanats and t55s.

but 400 tanks is kind of a lot, isn't that more than the entire amount of M1A2 tanks in the US army?

GDLS produced over 8,000 M1 tanks for the US army. 4,796 of those were M1A1, and 3.273 were the original M1 spec. About 1100 of the M1A1's were upgraded to M1A2 standard, and ~80 new ones were built. There was also a system enhancement package for the M1A2 that was supposed to be ~1100 units (M1A2SEP), but I don't know how many were delivered.

bull, i believe it was 310 T-90S originally purchased, so it would total 710 T-90S tanks

my apologies highsea, i thought America only had some 380 M1A2 tanks

so, there's approx. 1100 M1A2SEP tanks, hmm, i thought there were significantly less, oh well, that's kind of a lot, the SEP is a nice upgrade

how much does it take to take an M1 and upgrade it all the way to an M1A2SEP, including the inital purchase price for the M1, the T-90S tank costs about $2.1-2.5 million per model, just curious, doesn't the M1A2 cost $4.3-4.5 million?

Arjun and T series tanks are of different types .

Arjuns are area superiority tanks , much like M1A1 . The are defensive tanks and are made to fight against overwhelming firepower .
T tanks (T 72, T 90) are offensive tanks . They are lighter , faster and have low silhoutte .They are to break enemy offensives , defensive concentrations , etc .
The are for lightning strike and not for holding areas and urban conflict .

India needs both these tanks .

I have absolutely no indications that there are different doctrines between the two tanks regiment types.

We don't need more than 40 tanks in our army, as long as we don't attack 3 countries at once.

                      Yes you are right.
If you are going to attack Vatican, Monaco and Luxembourg then 40 tanks quite will suffice you.

Off topic this does make me wonder about the India local defense industries...

                            Arjun - T-90
                            LCA - MRCA
                            INSAS - AK-47
                            Trisusal (?) - Barak
                            Marut - Su-7

                            Probably a few more...

Basically making something locally and turning around and buying a theorically similar system from overseas while possibly lowering the amount of the locally made and theorically similar system (for example the Arjun)... while the locally made systems are hailed as such successes the import seems to play the bigger part you might say...

Hey , the INSAS is being manufactured and in substantial numbers.

Brig.Ray or Capt.LT should know better.
As for the Ak-47 , i think it is will be mainly used in area CI intensive areas.

Even then , most pictures of troops we see of IA jawans either hunting pigs in Kashmir or teaching some Yankees how to fight in a jungle in the JW school are carrying INSAS.
