DEVELOPING: Officials are scrambling to figure out how to rescue a 6-year-old boy who climbed into a homemade balloon before it floated away in Fort Collins, Colo.

The bizarre scene played out live on television and prompted fears that the flying saucer-shaped balloon would crash with the young child inside. FAA spokesman Mike Fergus says the agency has been notified and it was unclear whether traffic controllers had picked it up on radar.

Larimer County sheriff's spokeswoman Eloise Campanella says the device has the potential to rise to 10,000 feet. Sheriff's officials last saw the device floating south of Milliken, which is about 40 miles north of Denver. The craft is reportedly traveling at about 25 miles per hour.

The FAA is now clearing airspace near Denver International Airport.

Bill Hughes, owner of Blue Sky Balloons, a New York-based hot air balloon company, said there's two ways the balloon could potentially descend — by its occupant releasing some of the gas inside or someone adding weight to it in some way.

"One of those things would cause it to descend," Hughes told Fox News Channel.

"We were sitting eating, out looking where they normally shoot off hot air balloons. My husband said he saw something. It went over our rooftop. Then we saw the big round balloonish thing, it was spinning," said neighbor Lisa Eklund.

Additional details about the child and the balloon were not immediately available.

    Skydivers Needed

Send up a plane with ten skydivers. Launch each one at a time until one finally manuevers onboard I guess.

Can't think of any other way...:(

Maybe, B.B. gun or .22cal from a helicopter. Fire one round at a time and observe descent but there's nobody to assist the child on landing.

The balloon is down, but the kid was not in there...supposedly. He could have fallen out earlier. Or he might be hiding from his dad for letting the balloon get away.

Not only that, who's going to pay for the cost of the Military helicopters used to track the balloon?

The Black Hawk helicopter was in the air for nearly three hours, and the Kiowa helicopter was airborne for about one hour. The Black Hawk costs about $4,600 an hour to fly, and the Kiowa is $700 an hour.

Where are the cops/neighbors/local community board in asking the father why he had an enormous, inflated flying device loosely tied in his back yard? The videos shown of the guy on the news from his wife swap episode make him seem like a complete nutcase and his kids seem uncontrollable and without boundaries.

Yes; and when the boy was initially asked by a reporter why he didn't come out of hiding earlier when he heard everybody calling his name, he said "It was for the show". Dad looked VERY uncomfortable when junior said that . . . .
