Afghan insurgents pushed into U.S. base, official says - CNN.com

The current course is not working, after 8 years the locals still haven't joined the fight in enough numbers to matter, and recently new rules of engagement seem to hinder our troops, the bad guys can run back in to Pakistan and our guys can't chase them across the border, and public opinion is slipping, If Obama does not send the troops/resources General McCrystal wants should we do? Does this remind you of Vietnam?

*Have to agree with you there ol' bean. Thats has to be about the worst location, with the cliff and all looking down on you. A real bad spot to be in.

*Looking at that pic and thinking about the Palestinian/Israeli fighting, Is there any more questions why Israel wont give Syria back the Golan.;)

*Either someone is extremely stupid for that choice of location or it was a set up. One would think any foot soldier could pick out the faults with its location within minutes and recommend moving elsewhere.

I can't get over the fact that they could not pick that out just by looking upwards? Talk about fish in a barrel.

Given reason was that the valley floor was at the end of the road from Jalalabad and hence could be resupplied by truck. No doubt "jingle" trucks regularly make the trip to sell to the villagers, but I'd guess all military supplies ended up being coptered in or airdropped.

Still a ridiculous spot to choose. The roads could be mined, and as for re-supply by Helo, just sit on a rock and await the arrival of a Bird a pop it off. Hideous, the Officer who picked the place should be shot.

Can't disagree that it was a bad decision.

BTW, does anyone know if JPADS (GPS steerable airdrops) is deployed yet?

I don't believe so, still being trialled in Arizona. One of our US Buddies may be able to enlighten us.

a long detailed article of the battle.

(And maybe a mod could rename the thread to a more precise name?)
