  • Sanctions Against Iran- The Vote Count

It takes nine for votes and no against votes from the P5 to pass a resolution in the UN Security Council.

Here's my educated guess on their positions.

    Permanent Members
    US - For
    UK - For
    France - For
Russia - Could be persuaded to Abstain
    China - Against

    Non-Permanent
    Austria - Probably For
    Burkina Faso - Don't know
    Costa Rica - For?
    Croatia - Probably For
    Japan - For
    Libya - Against
    Mexico - Probably For
    Turkey - For
    Uganda - Don't know
    Vietnam - Don't know

I count 9 likely For and 2 definite against.

Permanent members have veto power. If China votes no, the resolution will not go through.

Indeed, as I said. The Chinese are currently the largest obstacle.

Neither France nor China Nor Russia will vote for it if it includes an embargo on refined fuel or arms shipments. As such, any further sanctions will have no effect anyway.
In the realm of spirit, seek clarity; in the material world, seek utility.
