    Yes, Norman is a contraction of Northman; during the late 9th and early 10th centuries, Vikings (primarily Danes) were invading the north coast of France (though it was called Francia back then), and the Frankish king at the time (Charles the Simple) decided the Vikings might be better as allies than enemies, so he ceded the present territory of Normandy to the Northmen after they swore fealty to him.
