  • How often do you use your laptop?

(that is, assuming you have one)

As just a computer? Everyday since it's the only one that is working as a link to the net.

As a portable extension of myself, with what my life is about?

More and more often. Today, for instance, I used it to demonstrate what my research is about......and signed another one on to my cause.

More and more often, it's there to turn on for the particular softwares I use, be it Google Earth or Offline Explorer.

Of course, it is a heavy thing in the pack, I notice it as I haul it around......but now that I have it....................

.......................how can I ever live without it again?

And what would you be researching? What is your cause?

I just gave mine to my daughter. With a PC at work and a couple at home, all with high speed internet connections, a blackberry that I seem to carry 24/7, along with an Apple iTouch; I’m interested in trying to find ways to disconnect myself from the online world.

And for those of you willing to relieve me of my burden by offering to take the iTouch, you’re too late I already promised it to my son. :))

If I were to have one, I'd have a docking station at home. E.g. a separate flat panel LCD, mouse, and keyboard. I'd be more comfortable using it, it could remain closed and it would save on the sort of wear and tear that more often than not eventually afflicts laptops.

            Same.

I use it just like I use my desktop, but I prefer the laptop when I am in for something that requires extensive reading.

I don't carry it around :)) Same for my cellphone too generally.

I rarely use my laptop. It's a pretty nice DVD burner though.

I only use mine when I'm on site somewhere, otherwise it's just a paperweight.

I Use mine every day to relieve stress after a working day. Play a bit of transport tycoon, watch a couple of TV episodes and then browse the net till i get sleepy.

Pretty much how I use mine but without the keyboard. I never transport it but use either flash cards or external drives to move anything around I need. The old G4 mac I've got at home now sits in the cupboard under the stairs and acts as my hub/router.

AH! The poor woman's laptop concept expanded. Before the laptop, I carried around a 5inch floppy box of CD's and flash drives to plug my stuff in. Of course, there are three main problems with this. First of all, one is hoping that there is a computer at the other end available. Secondly, neither of those two methods work that well for software that one might need. Finally, one finds themselves on a yo yo of speeds. This computer works wonderfully fast.....but this one works dreadfully slow.

Now there are wonderfully cheap external hard drives which neutralizes part of that......but they rather came about just when I was getting my lap top.

Well, for as much as the techie I am, I am still limited by what I carry around. I don't have a blackberry and the Ipod my sister in law gave me a few years ago? Still sitting around in those season boxes.....somewhere.

I spend at least 8 hours a day, 5 days a week infront of a massive system that I monitor over 8 screens. My original thoughts before my cable modem was that I ought to be finding ways to reduce my time on the computer, not increase it.......but there really is no way to get away from it. Besides......now that I do have a cable modem, research issues that are questionable can be done in a location where they aren't.

Well, I do have a remote mouse that I plug in because I figured the onboard mouse would be the first thing to go.

Right now, my home systems are out of commission, so the lap top is the only system.

Sorry, that's classified..........not because the subject is but because it is a little bit well known now that if said, someone could, with some well placed questions, use it to locate me off the net.

That's the advantage of my working in a specialist industry. Everyone I deal with has the systems and software or they aren't in the game.

If it's some non-tech account manager or such-like illiterate I just use my Prada.

Well, to each their own. The software on my laptop includes Google Earth, Sketch-Up, Offline Explorer, PDF generators, ALOHA, and WS-FTP to say a few.......and the office machines don't have that.

Why should they? Who would use it? That's not their game.

We are a technology section but there can be a wide range in the things that any particular member might do.
