FLIR pod mounted above the nose of the helicopter. (USN)

FLIR pod mounted under the nose of the Helicopter. (HN)

    Does it make any difference?

the bigger issue is whether its a hot or cold system.

I had to attend trials of a system a few months ago - the difference in usable range was in the order of 300-800% improvement.

Of course it does! Where the mounting gets in the way of whatever the FLIR is trying to look at, it's not going to be able to see it. For instance, the below-mounted FLIR can view directly beneath the helicopter, while the above-mounted FLIR cannot. Sorry for the simple answer, but it occurs to me that they will probably choose the mounting based in the type (and missions) of the helicopter variant. For instance the second pic is either a B, F, or R Seahawk, and it's anti-submarine role may warrant a FLIR picture beneath the aircraft, while other models would have no reason to want this.

One of the primary role of this helicopter is anti submarine warfare, still its FLIR pod is mounted above the nose.
