Some years ago, I found out the old man across the street ( papa Gene as we called him) was a Marine there! I went into my study and pulled out this WWII book loaded with photographs. It was a Time/Life book.
He looked at the pics and OMG it was like history come to life!! Not only did he recognize the pics he remembered the entire story behind it, where he was then etc..
It was probably the richer experiences of my life. Similar to my Dad telling me about the British 8th in Africa!

Helluva fight and one of my first experiences was reading Tregaskis' "Guadalcanal Diary" as a child.

My grandfather was a Marine and was on one of the landing boats at Guadalcanal. It was his 3rd island battle. He had shrapnel from something nearby went through his right hand and he was wounded and came home then. They wanted to amputate his hand but he wouldn't let the doctors so they put a steel plate in there. Over time the hand healed.
