I think I saw something on YouTube that showed what goes on below deck. Looked like only two squids were needed to run the whole system. There might have even been something going into detail on a Discovery or Mil. Channel program.

Three Primary modes of Fire Control for Main battery.

    1) Primary: Main battery directors (Spots 1 (Mainmast) Spot 2 (Aftmast) Spot 3 (Conning Tower or original FC spotting station) in association with Gun plot and the Mk. 41 Stable vertical contained in Main and Aft plot.

*Automatic- Gun Plot controls turret, sending info on trane and elevation through recievers in machinery pan and electric pan.

*Indicating- Gun position laid by turret crew in the "follow the pointer" mode with the Mk.41 Stable vertical as a guide.

    2) Secondary: Turret acts as Fire Control director for all turrets with indicating by Mk. 41 Stable vertical in Main gun plot.

    3) Local: Turret crew lays guns, utilizes sight control via telescoping range finder and Ford Mk 34 G.F.C.S. & Ford computer Mk.3

    Computations for turret computer imput:
    1) Range clock
    2) Deflection correction. (*Ex:For H.C. rounds deflect correction Left 6 Mils)
    3) Main deflection correction.
    4) Sight angle.
    5) Ship speed indicator.
    6) Target angle.
    7) Ships actual speed (from Pitot).
    8) H.C. Velocity at check. (Pre-calculated)
    9) A.P. Velocity at check. (Pre- calculated)
    10) Range correction.
    11) Wind speed. (Knots)
    12) Target speed. (Knots or stationary)
    13) Projectile class. (HC,AP or "dummy")
    14) Present range. (at time of calculation)

*These are assisted with information coming from Spots 1,2,3, Gyrocompass repeater, Stable vertical (Verticle seeking Gyroscope) etc.

*There is more as pending what mode of Fire Control you are in will determine how often you are re-configuring these calculations for targeting or Gun plots main FC computers (1 Able 1 & 1 Able 2 and Stable verticals) are configuring. But this is just to give you an idea.
