Came across these photos on Ebay. I know the Yanks love to experiment ..but jeeze is nothing sacred Did this aircraft see active service? or was it the result of someones "If we put that part together with that part I wonder what it'll look like and how will it fly?"

That is the P82/F-82 variant of the Mustang, it didn't saw action in the WW2 but it did in Korea. Actually the F-82 shoot down the first aircraft in the Korean war. As far as I know, it had a range of 8000km and it was armed with six 50 cal. guns and a radar pod, that big thingy between fuselages. The idea was that one pilot flies the plane during the take offs and landings and other one during the flight and combat.

P-82 was not a variant of P-51 just like F-18E is not a variant of the F-18A thru D.

It's curious when one comes across things in their lives. I came across the "Twin Mustang", oh gee, it must have been over 30 years ago, when I was a child and it was on the cover of "Scale Modeler".
